Black/purple finger - picture attached

Doesn't really show up, but it looks likes I've caught my finger in something and it has bruising up to the first crease. I haven't caught/banged it, it just became like that last night. Swelled and was hot, and I couldnt bend it though it is cold now and I can bend it more. You cant see in the pic but the "bruising" has spread a bit to under the next finger. My arm aches but apart from that I am fine.

Should I be worried? Can't find anything on Google apart from Reynard's Disease and it isn't the same.

Any advice appreciated, thanks

I know you said you haven’t injured it, but do you have a minor injuries unit nearby? It can be a sign of a circulation issue but as it’s ‘spreading’ I think it’s probably more urgent than a GP squeezing you in! MIU can refer on if more serious.

BlackenedFingerOfDoom · 13/04/2023 14:27

Docs suggested going to the chemist to see what they say, so am going to do that but thank you for your advice @Emmelina x

I did this a few months ago! It seems to have been a "paroxysmal finger hematoma". I picked up a plate by sliding my hand under it to load the dishwasher - felt a sharp "sting" in the finger at the point of the bruise and then it swelled and brushed really badly for a few hours!

I wrapped it in a tight but stretchy bandage to manage the swelling for a day or two. Took a week or so to fade - it spread along the whole finger in the end.

@PinkFootstool looks exactly the same! Just googled that and is seems very much like it. Did it make your arm ache as mine is a bit.

The chemist looked and said she had never seen anything like it and wasnt sure what it was. The bruising has spread to near the middle of my hand, but not painful. She said to go to the docs tomorrow if it is still bad.

Aschenbach Syndrome, I think it's called. It's apparently really rare, but it seems like loads of us on MN have it, when someone posts like this.

pickledandpuzzled · 13/04/2023 18:49

It's a pop and a sting. You get used to it. Happens often, and you just wait for it to heal.

BlackenedFingerOfDoom · 13/04/2023 18:53

Thank you @pickledandpuzzled will look at some threads x

Yes I get this too. Can look really bad and aches like it’s bruised but nothing ever comes of it. Always happens from the most minor touch to the finger!

pickledandpuzzled · 13/04/2023 18:55

12% of Women start with it a few years each side of 50, apparently.

PoBaFla · 13/04/2023 18:58

My mum used to get something similar. Was small blood vessel bursting

whitesnowflake · 13/04/2023 19:00

I get this too! Pop and sting sun it up. Don't know anyone else irl who has this. The only thing I could find when I googled was Reynauds, so although it didn't look like it wondered if it was a variation.

Alwayswonderedwhy · 13/04/2023 19:03

I get this sometimes. Sudden pain then the bruise appears Infront of my eyes. The GP was adamant I must injure myself but I don't.

Lambtales · 13/04/2023 19:37

I get this on my fingers usually. However I last had it on the heel of my foot!

Radi06music · 13/04/2023 20:16

My partner had this. It was a tiny thorn that he couldn't feel but it was infected

MyFuckRationsAreDepleated · 13/04/2023 20:19

Achenbach syndrome

Ontopofthesunset · 13/04/2023 20:21

I get this. It first happened in my 20s, but was pretty infrequent back then. It's usually fingers, but I have had it on my toes and also on the side of the foot occasionally. I'd say it happens every few months or so.

fairtrauchled · 13/04/2023 21:45

Achenbach syndrome.I did this by simply screwing a handle onto a drawer.

I get this all the time. You feel the pop and can feel your finger swelling/bruising then after a couple of days it goes

DenRob111 · 04/05/2023 16:58

I have got this for a second time now, thought my finger would explode it was so swollen the first time. Just looks a bit freaky bruising on one finger on the dominant hand but usually leaving the top section un-bruised. Apparently middle-aged is when this usually starts occurring, and most likely if you suffer from Reynauds and chilblains. (I am textbook usual case). Doctor said last time, no proper treatment, just manage swelling,ie, ice and elevate, ibuprofen.

Joolsin · 04/05/2023 17:07

My mum used to get this, and in the last few years, so have I. It's a little blood vessel popping. I've got them from such simple things as opening door handles. This one last week, I was typing and felt the "pop". They always look more spectacular than they feel.

I’ve had this too, sharp sting followed by extensive and spectacular bruising. It aches for a day or so then the bruising fades until the next episode.

Achenbach syndrome

I get this too. Have done for years. Like DenRob111, I also have Raynaud's and chilblains. Often a slight knock to a finger or gripping a knife too tightly when scraping carrots will initiate it. Mine itches, initially, then swells and stings, then a bruise appears which fades after a few days.

Achenbach syndrome: Painful Blue Finger – DermNet

Achenbach syndrome is a painful subcutaneous bruise resulting from damage to small veins in a finger, which causes it to swell and turn blue. It can be treated by cooling and avoiding triggers.
