I noticed today that my ds has his two bottom canines coming through behind his wobbly milk teeth. One is straight-the other appears at an angle-will it straighten out?

My dd had exactly the same so she didn't have a gap when the milk teeth fell out - so much attractive than the gappy thing!

Mind you she is 8 in May and has still only lost 2 milk teeth!

thanks for your replies-can rest easier now!

My 6 year old had 2 new bottom teeth coming through before his milk teeth had come out and they seem fine.

Ermmm....actually they not straighten themselves out..sorry!

It will all depend on how soon she loses her milk teeth & how her others come through.

You cannot really predict that they will be fine until alot more adult teeth are present.

chipkid · 14/02/2008 21:11

sandcastles do you think he will have wonky teeth for a while?-these are the only milk teeth wobbly-the rest are stuck firm! His dentist said a while back that he has good spacing between his milk teeth-does that count for anything?

That's not SO bad then...it certainly does make some difference, but again, will not be fully known until more teeth came through.

They call the period from first getting your adult teeth to the loss of all the baby teeth the 'Ugly Duckling' stage, which is a tad cruel, but can be quite true, as things do get a bit messy in there.

He still has lots of growing to do too, so only time will tell.

Sorry wanted to add....

That it is really hard to tell at this young an age, with just 2 adult teeth in place, which is why I said that they may not straighten out.

My dd was like this - all her adult teeth came down behind her baby teeth before the baby teeth came out. It looked really odd. We called her Fang. The dentist said that you have to be really careful cleaning their teeth because you can get problems of decay between the two sets, but apart from that it's usually OK. Dd is now 12 and has lovely straight teeth and no fillings, if that's any reassurance.

thanks all-have just googled the ugly duckling phase and it has answered lots of my questions .
