Adult family Member on chemotherapy, treatment halted today wbc is under 1 but has risen slightly since another blood test last week.

been told to be ultra careful, ideally keep away from others if possible and watch for sepsis.

complained of a sore throat earlier (have read this can be a sign), I’ve got the poster and a long list of things to be aware of. Temperature ok when they went to bed.

I’m feeling very anxious, we lost a family member last year unexpectedly to sepsis. Wondering if just to stay up all night and keep checking they are ok or set my alarm to go off say at hour intervals and check (I’m not in same room) Am already knackered due to everything I’ve needed to step up and do.

it’s going to be a long night isn’t it.

Do you have the chemo hotline number? Could you ring them and ask for advice?

RagzRebooted · 11/04/2023 23:36

I'd say 2 hourly checks wouldn't be unreasonable.
Hope you both get some sleep.

pizzaHeart · 11/04/2023 23:39

I would be staying up as long as I can and then move to interval check but it’s easier for me as a sleep pattern.
hope everything will be ok with your relative, it’s so scary .

Thanks yes I’ve a hotline number. Current status I feel is ok. Think I’ll go for the two hour obs and see how things progress.

I developed sepsis 3 years ago and went into sepsis shock. It started by feeling very faint, then I felt cold and couldn’t stop shaking even though I had a fever.

Can you sleep as close as you can to the patient? Do you think you would wake up if anything changed during the night?

MissHavershamReturns · 12/04/2023 00:05

No advice but you sound like a wonderful family member op. Sending a hand hold.

Thank you. We’ve devised a method that should wake me up if they feel unwell, the dogs will likely go loopy so that will wake me up also. Dr at hospital sent them home with more antibiotics so that should help. I’m so tired as I’ve already had many sleepless nights these past months.

I would check every couple of hours

(I'm neutropenic and usually 0.4-1 so used to being aware of neutropenic sepsis for myself!)
