Peripheral arterial disease in your 40s

I've been getting pain in my right leg for a few weeks. It starts at the top of my foot just below the ankle and goes right up my shin, behind my knee and into my thigh.

I didn't think that much of it at first as I already have quite painful knees so just thought it was a different niggle and it would go, but it hasn't.

I work with district nurses and when I told them my symptoms they initially said blood clot but it's not got to touch, not swollen so they ruled that out. Then then asked if that foot was paler than the other and it is, it also goes paler when raised in the air and my capillary refil in my foot is 7 seconds. They said it is most likely peripheral arterial disease and I need see a doctor. They are actually going to check my foot pulses for me once we can get hold of the Doppler machine.

I'm 44, don't smoke but I am around 3 stone overweight, prob nearer 4. I am trying to lose weight but menopause is making it a very slow process.

Does anyone have any experience of this at this age ? All of my experience of people who have this are patients in their late 50s and above, generally in poorer health anyway, diabetic etc and with foot/leg ulcers.

Does anyone have any advice ?

Meant to add that the pain wakes me in the night and painkillers don't really do much.
Also the pain is less on waking
