Increased heart rate while ill?

I’ve felt a bit “off” since Thursday and today woke up coughing my socks off. Did a lateral flow test which was negative, but have since lost taste, so who knows - I feel horrendous either way. I’ve had Covid twice before (have had three jabs) and the first time felt like this, the second was pretty much a non-event.

To the question - is it normal for your heart rate to speed up if you’re sick? My resting HR is usually about 57, today it’s 60, but I happened to glance at my Fitbit while standing at the back door to get the cat in and it was over 100 which seems super high!

(I’m 50, female, normal weight, pretty fit/active, non-smoker, and no health issues beyond routine things like hayfever and reflux.)

Mine usually increases when I'm ill especially if I've got a temperature.

LIZS · 08/04/2023 21:00

Yes it is normal for an infection and with activity so 100 is not that high.

QuintanaRoo · 08/04/2023 21:01

Yes, tachycardia is a symptom of infection. But a RR of 60bpm is nothing to worry about and even a transient reading of 100 is nothing to worry about. My rr is 60bpm and can have blips up to a 100 when doing stuff round the house.

Thank you for the speedy responses - really reassuring!

Bloody hell, I meant pulse not rr. 🤷‍♀️😂. My brain fog gets worse!

Yup, mine always increases when ill. Fitbit thinks im
dojng exercise.

NadjaCravensworth1 · 08/04/2023 22:51

Just keep an eye on the reading rate, obviously if it says at a 100 for a while you might want to do some breathing exercises but if it went straight back down you're fine x

*resting

I've not noticed it from other illnesses but I have now twice had covid and both times I was getting high heart rate notifications while doing nothing. It did leak and trough, not constantly a million beats a minute.

It's normal but if it feels painful, goes on too long or you have a sense of impending doom then call a doctor.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 08/04/2023 23:13

Oh I am not getting notifications, don’t worry! I’m coughing so much it’s probably equivalent to an abs workout. This is Covid, right? I didn’t get a positive LFT until well after the positive PCR the first time round, although the second time (when I tested out of curiosity mainly) it was practically black in seconds.

SO annoying. As well as feeling completely rotten I’m on holiday this week and next and had loads of lovely things planned.

It's completely normal, had the same thing a week ago and felt so poorly I managed to get a doctors appointment. He said that it was ok. X

PriamFarrl · 08/04/2023 23:20

Yes completely normal but….. DH had atrial fibrillation when he was ill with what was so like covid it had to be covid even though the test was negative over Christmas. He only knew because his watch flashed it up.

So, mostly normal to have a raised heart rate but not if it goes all over the show.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 08/04/2023 23:39

I’d get a notification from my watch if it spiked super high. During a workout it often gets up to about 150bpm but my recovery time is really fast and the heart health thing has me as “excellent” for women of my age.

I’m sat here coughing away and it’s currently 80. DP has just stripped and changed the bed in the spare room so he can sleep in there. The poor cat is looking at me in horror!

Sounds awful. Hope you recover soon!

I think covid tests do what they want. I'd be acting as if it was, just to be safe.

First time I'd had it for about 4 days before a lateral flow was positive (tested every day from onset) and second time symptoms literally turned on like a light and I tested the next morning once I realised it didn't feel like a normal cold and it was positive. That one was over in 3 days but the first time lingered.

sashh · 09/04/2023 08:37

Completely normal and the rate of 100 if you have just got up and walked tot he door is fine too, it Will only be a couple of beats. If it didn't do that you would faint every time you stood up.

Wrap up warm, take fluids and look after yourself.

Kissedbyfire1 · 09/04/2023 08:54

Same here. I’ve been ill with some horrible virus (cough, sinusitis etc) for a month now and my rhr which is normally mid to high 50s has been consistently above 70. It’s starting to come down now which I assume means I’m recovering although it doesn’t feel like it. Conversely, last time I had a virus (tonsillitis) a few months ago, my rhr was very low - high 40s - which worried me a bit.
