Does this sound like lactose intolerance?

I don't eat much dairy, I have dairy free yoghurt, milk and butter but I do have ice cream and chocolate which cause no reaction. Same with, for example, a jar of curry sauce that has milk in it.

When I eat cheese, within about 10 minutes I get diarrhoea, have to run to the toilet and feel like I'm about to be sick and get tummy ache and then within an hour it passes and I'm totally fine again. It's usually cheddar or Parmesan.

Everything I've read online seems to suggest reactions take a few hours with lactose intolerance and that cheddar and Parmesan are low lactose and that ice cream is high lactose. Is there something else in the cheese that I could be having a reaction to?

10 minutes? That’s hardly hit your stomach let alone been digested

Yes usually before I've even finished the meal. For example today I had a wrap for lunch with cheese in and before I finished it my stomach started hurting and about 15 minutes after that I had to run to the toilet.

Day before yesterday I had parmesan on my pasta and before I finished my meal the same thing happened

Has it just happened twice?

Jojobalone · 08/04/2023 15:39

You are pregnant though - and that can trigger weird food sensitivities

No, it's been going on for a few months. I thought it was just pregnancy related upset stomach but realised day before yesterday it's only when I have cheese on my pasta or in a sandwich. I tested it today and it seems like it is cheese but not sure why it's not happening with ice cream or chocolate too

Give lactose free a try and that will assist

Ah how did you know? do you know me in real life?

That might be it, I'll avoid cheese for the rest of the pregnancy and try again after

No but I was on your other thread randomly

so if only developed during pregnancy, I’d wager it’s pregnancy related

and 10 minutes…. Honestly I don’t think it’s even reached the stomach yet

Most Ice cream is made from "non dairy products"
My DH is lactose intolerant,he has lactose free milk, rarely eating cheese. Me,I love cheese, stronger the better. If I have a Welsh rarebit, with a hot chocolate,I'm running for the toilet in agony, terrible diarrhea, once wearing white jeans, didn't make it!! He refused to believe me as well. I've had tea and cold drinks with rarebit,no effect. The first couple of times with the hot chocolate, I thought it was a fluke, unfortunately not!

Cheddar cheese gets me even though it says it's one of the better cheeses to have. Takes about half an hour to affect me. The only thing to have a worse effect is milk.
I can have a sliver of cheese, no more.
I avoid ice cream as I wouldn't like to test it and am OK with a moderate amount of chocolate.

That's so strange isn't it, at least you know to avoid that combination now!

Maybe it's the pasta and bread rather than the cheese - wheat? gluten?

WeAreTheHeroes · 08/04/2023 15:49

What about CMPA or coeliac disease. Speak to your GP though rather than self-diagnosing with randoms, like me, on the internet.

That's interesting, that's why I was confused as it says online it's one of the better cheese to have.

I haven't had milk (as in a glass of milk or with cereal) for years but I don't think I'd like to test it. I can have something with milk in the ingredients and be ok though.

I don't have ice cream that often but I did have some yesterday when out and I was completely fine.

@specialsauce @WeAreTheHeroes I hadn't even considered bread and pasta.

I think I'll keep a food and symptom diary for a week or two and then contact the GP as I assume they will ask me to do one anyway. Thank you!

Doctor diagnosed me with ibs but said to try ruling out lactose and gluten intolerance.
Milk on its own is a no but in food and a small amount in a cup of tea is fine. Parmesan is good. Not cheddar. In fact anything but cheddar but in small amounts. Apparently it depends on the kind of lactose product? I googled something!
I've cut down gluten just in case.
Onions, leeks etc are a definite no. I will pick these out of foods rather than risk it.

It's all a lot of trial and error in my opinion.
