Scabies?!

Going out of our minds, we thought we had scabies a month or so ago, so we treated with permethrin.
Repeated treatments so in total we have used the cream 4 times now. We've done everything correctly, boil washed everything we come into contact with.
It doesn't seem to be getting any better, sometimes the spots all look like they're healing but then new ones look like they appear on DS.

These photos are from DS leg & shoulders.

I feel your pain. I really hope you get this sorted. My daughter has just been diagnosed with this and I am so scared. I have treated with the same cream yesterday and am hoping for the best.

@jsk18 I know this was a while ago, but did you manage to get rid of it? If so, how? We are going through the same at the moment.

And me too: it’s actually my colleagues son who has scabies and she has found that even multiple treatments of the cream is doing nothing. Any other guesses from anyone for ways to treat? Their gp had said there is literally only this one cream, nothing else is on the market at all apparently!

Broop · 08/12/2023 13:01

@jsk18 @JKSHM did you get rid of them?

jsk18 · 08/12/2023 13:26

@wineoohh @Broop I'm so sorry you're having to go through this and I sympathise with you completely! It was the absolutely worst time of our lives to be honest, we were so depressed for around a year we did numerous treatments of permethrin with no results. It spread from my parents and to us and it went back and forth all this time.

Long story short - YES! We did get rid of them and are scabies free now.
So basically, we were back and forth to the GP and after a ton of desperate research we begged them for Malathion Lotion which is often sold as Derbac M.

All affected households did one treatment at the same time and repeated it a week later I believe. It worked straight away!

We are based in the North East UK and we were able to get this alternative treatment prescribed. There was a huge shortage however, which meant we forked out over £100 to have it shipped over from Ireland but it was worth it. Please get your Doctor to prescribe this as an alternative to Permethrin which was completely ineffective.

I hope you manage to get rid of the little bast*rds!!! ❤️‍🩹

@jsk18 well done for getting rid! The gp has apparently been extremely dismissive and doesn’t really treat it like a real problem for some reason. Anyway I’ll recommend the above and fingers crossed… thanks for your reply

Hi,

My daughter ended up being misdiagnosed by 3 doctors! They all said Scabies... but nothing was working. In the end one doctor thought it might be a bacterial skin infection that was brought on by her scratching her eczema and it getting infected. She prescribed an anti bacterial cream and it cleared up in 3 days. I know how you are feeling as I honestly thought it was scabies. Maybe get a 2nd opinion if it is not working. My daughter went through this for a whole year when it could have been sorted in 3 days with the right diagnosis. Thinking of you.

JKSHM · 08/12/2023 13:56

So pleased to hear you that you managed to kill the bastards! This advice is great for others.

wineoohh · 09/12/2023 12:59

Thanks for updating @jsk18.
We saw a dermatologist privately, and she prescribed two doses of ivermectin, which we took at the same time, a week apart, as doing two further permethrin treatments (and all the washing of bedding, clothes etc). We think this may actually have worked, although we weren't sure at first as there were still some new marks which appeared on my DD's hands around a week or so after the second treatment... we now believe these might just be eczema or a reaction to the cream as they now seem to be improving/ disappearing. Fingers crossed.

Unfortunately, Derbac seems to be completely unavailable at the moment.

It's such a horrible thing to go through - sympathies to anyone else who is experiencing this! You would think that there ought to be more reliable treatments out there which are more readily available without having to go through a dermatologist.
