Does she just have the ring or another rash as well?

My ds2 had ringworm at 5m. It looks like round or oval red shapes, more red at the edges and gets into the damp places - nappy area, back of knees, groin etc.

Unfortunately by the time it was diagnosed it had spread all down the back of his legs, tummy, back, bum etc. The bloody health visitor at first said it was a sweat rash and to put nappy cream on it which made it worse as ringworm likes damp! We used cream called Clotrimazole which was on prescription. Its the same as Canesten.

Now here is the bad news. IT TAKES AGES TO GET RID OF IT.
Because it was in the nappy area and that area is usually damp - damp if using cloth nappies and damp from sweat etc if using non-breathable disposables, it actually took THREE AND A HALF MONTHS for it to finally clear.

Even the parts up his back and back of legs which were not in nappies took about a month to clear.

We kept seeing an improvement then it would come back. We kept on putting the cream on 3 times a day and giving as much nappy free time as poss and gradually gradually it went. Whenever we went out and he went more than about 3 hours without some nappy free time it went worse again.

The clotrimazole instructions say that it needs to be applied for ages before any improvement can be seen as ringworm is very stubborn.
How long have you been applying the cream? It might be working but just very gradually.

The reason I ask my question is that a ring worm like rash can be the herald patch for a viral rash called Pityriasis Rosea.

I thought I had ring worm as the herald was classic shape and looked just like the pics. First doctor agreed with me and gave me clotrimazole. It didn't do anything and I then got a rash all over my trunk. When I went back the rosea was diagnosed. It takes six weeks to go and is very itchy. There is nothing they can give you for it.

Nizoral shampoo used in the shower helped mine (nice!) I think twice a week for 2 weeks, then once a week.

I had ringworm, and it took 6 months of religious application of the cream before it finally went.

You need to make sure any of her clothes/towels etc are washed at a high temp as you can reinfect the same area.

You don't say how old your daughter is, but preventing scratching of the ringworm will help. Also, covering any other areas of broken skin sould prevent it from spreading to another area of the body.

Oh yes, and washing with Wrights cold tar soap helped - stings like mad though.

I had ringworm and it took about a year to get rid of, but as I couldn't reach half the patches I didn't treat it very systematically, and after a while I got used to it, and then it went. dd (who I caught it off) got over it much faster, but it was still a matter of months. You can get some more systemic treatment (ie pills), but I think it's quite powerful.

My dd has discoid excema - sometimes mistaken by GP's for ringworm. Ringworm patch is red around the edges but 'normal' looking skin in the middle. Discoid excema is circular patches.

ds2 also had the rash Sunshinemummy had - the herald patch was very similar.
