Overactive thyroid advice

Hello! A month ago, I was diagnosed with an overactive thyroid 6 months after having my third baby. I've been out on 50mg propylthiouracil daily to manage to symptoms. I've been fine and felt relatively back to normal since taking them until Saturday evening where I felt a lot of my symptoms return - feeling hot but no temperature, constant headache, stuff neck, exhausted and miserable. Is it normal for symptoms to return like this? Will it settle back down again like before? I saw my GP this morning and she basically said it's not possible and that my recent bloods came back better than before. I'm confused as I feel exactly how I felt before I started the medication. Did anyone else have this after having a baby and then it went away after a while? Is there anything natural I can do to help manage how I'm feeling? Sorry for all the questions! I'm desperate to feel normal again!

I've just seen all my spelling mistakes 🤦🏼‍♀️ I clearly need more sleep! Insomnia is another of my symptoms 🤣

Look up post partum thyroiditis. Your thyroid function goes nuts with this and can fluctuate between over and under, so l don’t see why it shouldn’t fluctuate between over and very over, even with the medication. The doctors initially thought I had this but I’m still overactive 17 years post partum so I guess not!

Mine went overactive and I was diagnosed with Graves' disease after the birth of my dd. I've just had my ds and it corrected itself during my pregnancy. I'm 16 weeks pp and it's currently in the normal range.

Sounds like graves to me too, and should probably be under endocrinology, has your GP done a referral? I’ve had different thyroid issues and GPs tend to not be able to manage it as well.

Had did you get treated so quickly ? Did you go private ? I had an urgent referral in august and Ive still not had an appointment through. I literally can't control my temperature, summer is not looking fun.

I had Graves’ disease after DS1, it resolved after 2.5y and another baby, however I always felt fine on the medication.
Check the info leaflet, I can’t recall off the top of my head but there are some concerning symptoms to look out for when taking PTU as in a small percentage of people it can mess with your liver.

If you do feel rough tomorrow ask for another blood test, or leave a message with your consultant for advice.

@userxx Chase this up ASAP, they shouldn’t leave you unmedicated for so long. Go through hospital outpatient dept to check you’re on a list and back to the GP urgently if not. You may have been missed

When I spoke to someone at my GP surgery she said appointments were taking around a year and a half!! I'll look into private. Is it dangerous to be left untreated ?

Hi,

I've got Graves Disease, so I've had a few flare ups of overactive thyroid over the years. In my experience, you will have times when you have symptoms but your bloods are normal. Some doctors will tell you it's not possible, but from my experience it is. After my first flare up it took about 2 years on medication before I was completely symptom free and my blood tests were in the normal range after a couple of weeks on medication. But after DS1 was born I had a flare up and recovered much quicker. I was discharged from the endo after a year and felt healthy for most of that.

As for what you can do... In my experience (nothing scientific here, sorry), my symptoms are worse with stress. I know that's not much help when you have a baby, but try to get some rest and look after yourself. Also caffeine isn't your friend, although you feel exhausted and like you need it to function, it will help if you can cut down as much as possible. I don't smoke, but doctors kept telling me I needed to quit anyway, so I guess that must be important.

On the plus side, I haven't had a flare up in about 10 years and had another baby in that time. So there is hope for a return to a normal healthy left once your thyroid levels have stabilised properly
