Please tell me it will grow back!

My toenail that is.

About a month ago I (thought) I ripped the cuticles, DH inspected it and said it was not too badly damaged and it stopped hurting after about a week. It has been an interesting colour (purple fading to dull red) but no pain.
Then earlier my overexcited toddler ran at me and stubbed my toe with her sliper, ripping the nail off the bed!!

DH says it is now only attached at the base, and there appears to just be skin under it.
I am going to the docs tomorrow to have him look but if the nail is dead and has come off, will it grow back?!
And what will the doc do? will he cut it or what?

ps. it doesn't hurt, thank god

jesus, it made me recoil in horror just reading that

sorry don't know

need to have a lie down

No ides, but I physically winced at your description of your toddler's collision with your toenail. Oooooohhhhh!

harpsichordcarrier · 13/02/2008 19:20

oh poor poor you
I had my toenail drop off a few years ago (long story) and it grew back fine, a bit ridgy at first but now you wouldn't know
I used a false (thumb) nail to protect it for a while until it grew back

FrayedKnot · 13/02/2008 19:20

God that sounds excruciating didn;t it hurt at the time?

But yes I think it will gro back.

I lost my entire finger nail once when I had a fungal infection, but it grew back after a while

ChirpyGirl · 13/02/2008 19:26

Thank god they grow back, DH is insistent that they don't!

It hurt so bad when I first did it that I couldn't even take my sock off, and I had to BF DD2 to sleep before examining it.
DH had to kneel at my feet and peel it off while distracting me with inane banter.
This time I yelled out that I needed him as I thought I was going to drop the baby (I had DD2 on my lap) and he came so fast and was so gentle.

He's not the most romantic soul but he cna be a good one when it matters!

Worst of all is he has just given me my Valentines pressie to cheer me up, a set of Champneys bath stuff!
BUT I can't have a bath with my toe like this!

Years ago I did a very long walk in trainers that were too small which resulted in losing both my big toenails. I am pleased to be able to tell you that they did grow back, but it seemed to take forever. There was a bit of old nail in place & the new nail grew pushing the old out. Sorry if this is too much info! My friend's Mum was a nurse & she checked them & advised to keep clean & covered with a sort of tube like bandage. This was over 20 yrs ago, so advice may now be different.Glad to hear that you are not in pain.

PortAndLemon · 13/02/2008 19:37

Yes, it will grow back -- will take a few months though. I've lost a couple of big toenails over the years (actually, the most recent one has just grown back to full length. It was May last year that I did the damage that killed off the original nail and sometime a couple of months later that DS managed to accidentally rip it off me (so I really do sympathise with your pain... if you'd like it ripped the whole way off I can send him round ). So IME around 9 months from initial damage to nail being back to normal.

Portandlemon - thanks but that's okay, really!

I am hoping the doc will have a nice painless way of getting it off. the problem I have is I can't get any shoes on, so I will have to go out tomorrow wearing

crocs

I too lost 2 toe nails whilst training for a marathon - was very very grim when they came off, but they did grow back (took aaaaaggggggeeeeeeesssssss)

Well, went ot see doc this morning, apparently I have to go into minor surgery and should keep it strapped and as dry as possible until then.

So they make me an appoitnment....next available
7th March!

It will have fallen off by itself by then, and what does 'as dry as possible' mean anyway!!
