TomatoesAndPeaches · 02/04/2023 02:15

My folate level is ug/L >24.00

I presume this is high?

I take 5mg of Folic acid , advised by a consultant a long time ago…

Is it because of the folic acid?

Doctor doesnt know and iv got to wait for a hospital appointment with consultant

Any help appreciated

Thank you

5mg a day? That is a lot and is the dose you take to bring your levels up if you are folate deficient. I suspect you were told to start taking it as you were deficient. But didn't realise you had to stop or reduce when the deficiency had been resolved? That took me a few weeks when I was deficient. So if you've been taking that much for years I strongly suspect that's why your folate levels are too high.

Presumably you've now stopped taking it?

Have you had your B12 checked too? High folate can be an indicator of low B12 but in this case it’s probably due to the supplement.

I think your GP is being a bit extra, I wouldn’t be worried if I were you. Mine is over 24 too, my GP has no concerns and I’m not even supplementing beyond the amount in my postnatal vitamins.

Iv been on 5mg a day since i got diagnosed with Kidney disease….
Its a repeat prescription and it was always suppose to be ‘forever’

My Vitamin B12 is in the normal range 304 ng/L

I havent stopped taking it.
Should i ? I cant seem to find the right answer online

Many thanks

Can you not go back to the prescribing consultant for advice?

Pollywoddles · 02/04/2023 03:39

Definitely do not stop taking it.

Ah ok you have kidney disease. It looks like folic acid may be prescribed to reduce the risk of progression of chronic kidney disease. I agree with pp you need to contact the doctor who prescribed it.

TomatoesAndPeaches · 02/04/2023 12:02

I am waiting to talk to that doctor at the hospital but i need to wait for an appointment
And looking online, i cant find the answer if its to high or not

Thank you for your answers so far

There isn’t really a thing as too high with folate as far as I understand, it’s water soluble so what you don’t use, you pee out, like with vitamin C. As I said, mine is over 24 as well and my GP didn’t even bat an eyelid.

Don’t worry about it.

Ok.

Thank you
