Hi, I'm worried about a sudden bald patch on my head. I had a similar thing happen about 7 years ago after a stressful event. I've been quite stressed applying and interviewing for jobs and some work related stuff. Has anyone else had this experience? I'm a 35 year old female for context. Last time I had a blood test and it didn't show any issues there.

Probably stress alopecia, does it feel slightly bristly? I had this too at a time of extreme stress. It grew back white and whisky for a few inches, I act had act had woman lean over to pick 'cobwebs' out of my hair. After a couple of inches it went the same colour as the rest if my hair. I blobbed blowed bit of sunblock on it when I remembered.

This looks very much like alopecia areata. (I am no longer a medic, but have it myself.) The GP or a decent hairdresser could confirm. If you've had it before and your hair grew back, hopefully it will this time too.

Agree- alopecia aureata. It should go away on its own but might take a while and get worse first- sorry 😢

I know it's worrying, but as someone with similar patches (about five at the last count) I hope it's okay for me to say please, please, please try to stop stressing about it.

You already know that worry makes it worse. According to the stats I've read, the hair grows back for most people. I wasn't even aware of mine (due to the position on my head) - my hairdresser pointed it out. My attitude is that, if I lose all my hair (rarely happens apparently - that's a different type of alopecia) I shall simply wear a turban :-). (Not cultural appropriation btw - there are now some really nice ones for women without hair - for whatever reason - to wear.)

@whyhere thank you, I will try not to. My partner noticed it as he is much taller than me so could see it. I'm going to just clip my hair back to cover it and hope it doesn't get bigger ..I'm a teacher, so my job involves obviously seeing lots of people and I just don't want it to get worse. But nothing I can do. I think once the initial shock and worry has gone away I'll be ok. I wonder whether I should book a blood test in case

Bless you - good idea to cover it with your hair as if you feel better about it that will reduce the stress.

I didn't ask for a blood test, nor was I offered one, but then I'm annoyingly laid back about stuff that won't kill me 😆

Oneanddone88 · 01/04/2023 18:08

Haha fair enough 😂 I think I'll go as I think my anxiety doesn't help but I've never had professional support for it

I feel ur pain. I'm a teacher and I have two that are increasing. The doctor gave me some steroid cream but it made no difference. Considering going back. Hope ur's ur's improves

Good luck with this. DH had it about ten years ago though it did get much worse than yours over about two years. Now however it is almost complete resolved, very occasionally he might get a tiny patch. No treatment made any difference but please be assured it very often does get better on it's own as you know.

Thank you, the hair has started growing back, just need to manage my stress now..!
