Is this a sprained ankle?

Last weekend I did a new workout on Saturday followed by a run on Sunday. Early in the run I experienced slight pain to one of my ankles but stupidly ran through it assuming it was going to pass (I'm a relatively new runner but have built up my capability through Couch to five 5).

A couple of days after the run I noticed some slight ankle pain, mainly while climbing stairs. I ordered a compression strap and had a couple of decent days but the last couple of days I can feel it again,

There is no redness or swelling that I can see, just a mild pain around the ankle bone facing out of my foot. I can feel it when sitting down and it's a bit sore when walking/climbing. It's most sore when I move my foot so my foot is flat if that makes sense.

I'm wondering if this is serious enough to bother my GP with or if it will pass. I've never had a sprained ankle or injury of this type so any experiences much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

I’ve sprained my ankle a couple of times, both times when I fell over, once slipped on ice and the other tripped over a cable. I put a support bandage on ankle all the time apart from in bed. It does take a while to get better, I’d say at least 3/4 weeks, keep weight off ankle as much as possible and put a cushion under ankle when resting.

Thanks a lot for that, appreciated.

Unlikely to have a break without direct injury so it's likely sprained. Can take 6 weeks to heal.

I sprained my ankle. Took 6 months until I was walking without a limp.

I wouldn't bother going to the GP unless it swells or is drastically more painful. I'd rest as much as possible, raise it up when you can and ice it at least 3 times a day for 20 mins a time. I'm sure it'll sort itself out OP

Thanks a lot all. I suspect it's not a break as not bruised or swollen. Looking at my steps it was leas sore on the days I walked less (the three days after the injury) so I will rest more!

*less sore

Yes, rest and elevate, but do gentle stretches to keep the full range of movement. Joints can stiffen up really fast with lack of movement

Thanks again for the helpful comments. It's still hurting after three weeks although I can walk without difficulty e.g. I did a day trip yesterday and was able to walk fine although I felt it. It is also slightly swollen. Is this the time to call my GP or pop into minor injuries or have others had swelling after three weeks? Thanks in advance.

I would see a physio, here you can do an econsult and be triaged to see one locally.

It doesn’t sound like a sprain tbh, more like inflammation. For a sprain the guidance is now no ice, no anti-inflammatoires and keep up with as much movement as is comfortable (obviously no marathon training). If you’ve done all this and it’s still sore 4-6 weeks later it’s worth getting checked out, especially as it doesn’t sound like you’ve done anything to sprain it.
