Threadworms in adults, itchy bum

I have had an itchy bum for a while now and thought that it was piles, which I have. Finally, I saw something that looked like a white thread in my poo, resulting in my buying ovex from the chemist. I took one pill a week ago and will take another next week.
I must have had threadworms for a while! The thing is, I don't live with children, nor do I work as a teacher, etc.

Apparently there are lots of ways to get them! I have told people who come into my house.

The worms are quite widespread amongst kids and parents, but it seems like you don't need to have kids to get them! Its pretty gross, but I am doing what you are supposed to.
Just saying how itchy and yuck it is.
Anyone else?

As a student I worked a few days in colonoscopy clinic and it’s more common than you’d think!

It's down to poor hygiene. It's common in children purely because they are notoriously poor with hygiene. It's not specifically a childhood issue.

Wow! Did the people affected know that they had threadworms? Apparently people can have them without any symptoms, which is concerning!

No a fair few had no idea and were really embarrassed. Lots of them thought it was piles. I’m not bothered by it to be honest. Seen a lot worse.

I have just taken my second dose of medication which this time round is supposed to kill the eggs. I haven't seen any worms in my stool recently.

Have been drinking turmeric tea and eating garlic chopped in yoghurt as well although the pills should do the job.

Have been cleaning finger nails every time I wash my hands, which is very often, showering in the mornings, washing pj bottoms and towels and sheets, cleaning the WC and basins regularly.

You’re incorrect actually - they’re just highly contagious and as they can live in any surface/clothing etc then it’s easy for them to spread around.

Hi OP was just wondering what your symptoms were as an adult. My kids have had them and I've treated us all as a family. But wondered if they cause any gastric issues??

Eat raw carrots, pineapples, pumpkin seeds and papaya (if you can stomach it).

I've had threadworms a few times (infant teacher, nail biter). I always used to feel vaguely unwell - bloated and nauseated - before I treated them.

Yes, I used to feel bloated and out of sorts.
Don't use shared towels.

This. You can pick them up so easily.
