I just wondered if there's anyone out there who this has happened to who would be willing to tell their story...

Why? Is it a research thing, or has it happened to you?

MissMarpleBum · 22/03/2023 19:31

@Coffeellama yes, it's happened to my baby. Hope that clears things up for you.

Hi OP
my daughter had a stroke whilst in the womb. She was born prematurely and the weakness in the right side of her body was slowly apparent.
At about 9 months old she had a brain scan and consequently medium brain damage and hymerplegia was diagnosed.
That was nearly 24 years ago, she has a limp and weak right hand which does cause her some discomfort… but she also has a first class degree and works as a secondary school teacher. I am so proud of her 😊

Sorry, I meant to add, best of luck with your baby OP, I remember it being a very worrying time xxxxx

@millypeggyandpandora Thank you so much, this is such an encouraging read. Can I please ask if you don't mind, did your daughter ever suffer with seizures, or any cognitive issues, or would you say the issues were purely physical? Thank you again so much xxx

Hi OP
The neurologist told us when she had her brain scan that she would probably suffer from epilepsy and some cognitive impairment, including speech difficulties. Which was so worrying and hard to hear. However they did not materialise, mainly, I presume, because a baby’s brain is incredibly good at repairing and modifying.
She is extremely emotional however, and still always close to tears, although she is 24! I sometimes think this is due to her hemiplegia.

@millypeggyandpandora a friend of a friend has a little girl who is 4 now & she suffered a stroke at birth, you would never, ever know. In fact she's ridiculously clever & switched on, no physical issues than preference of using one hand but you'd only look for it if you saw it.

Just wondering what the future has in store for us, & it's such a mixed bag hearing stories of great outcomes to children with severe impairment. So difficult. Thank you for your comments xx

Oh OP, I feel for you, not knowing is the worst thing.
You can only try to stop your mind over thinking about the future, as it’s so pointless and exhausting.
Take care and try not to allow your worries to negatively affect your time with your lovely baby (easier said than done, I know!) xxxxxx
