Dental treatment

Hi,

The last couple of times I’ve been to my dentist I’ve been told I have ‘pockets’ around my teeth and need deep periodontal cleaning at a cost of £1200.
This has only happened since I changed from an NHS to private dentist three years ago, even though X-rays were taken by the NHS one.
I don’t have particularly bad breath, don’t bleed when brushing and only slightly when flossing.
I’ve been told if I don’t have it done it will just get worse and lead to tooth loss, but I feel sceptical whether this isn’t just a money making exercise!
Does anyone have experience of this, or know anything about dental practices?

Maybe go elsewhere for a second opinion.
I once had a dentist insist my white filling needed removing because the tooth sometimes rots from underneath it. I was young and trusting.
He removed the filling, declared it looked ok after all, then told me how much it would cost to replace with another white one -which I then couldn’t afford. Bastard.

Bleeding when flossing is a sign of gum disease. I’d say get it sorted now, it’s only going to get worse if left untreated.

I’ll be interested to read others’ experiences too as have had a very similar experience. The hygienist scared the life out of me with talk of possible tooth loss despite regular visits and little plaque. Sold me £400 of so called specialist treatment which I assumed was in some amazing surgery - turned out it was just two more appointments with her, just a different name for them. The surgery are known for being pushy, I’m now moving elsewhere.

Hi,
i cannot comment about your treatment and cost involve . Please bear in mind that periodontal disease ( gum disease that is extended deeper ) is a chronic disease, I always emphasis to patient that maintaining a good oral hygiene and plaque control is even more important that professional treatment .

good luck with your treatment !
