Lactose intolerant and pregnant? HELP!

Hi all,

Currently 20 weeks pregnant with my second child and for the past 5-6 weeks my stomach/bowels have been playing up.... to say the least.

TMI - sorry! But I have had the worst diorreah ever! The first few weeks it was 7-8 times a day. Now a few weeks on, I'm starting to think I maybe have a dairy intolerance.

Last week I cut out dairy. I felt so much better for it and things started to look normal.

But obviously with Mother's Day weekend I've went a bit heavy with the dairy and oh my days, it's been awful. For example, I had home made lasagne this evening and 2 hours later on the dot I've been to the toilet twice. Starts off with terrible wind and then I need to sprint to the looShock

I also read somewhere that food poisoning can maybe trigger IBS/lactose. I'm wondering if this is true as I had a really bad case of it about 6 weeks ago. Was in bed for a week and couldn't stop being sick.

Doctor doesn't seem to concerned at this stage and would obviously like a sample to rule out infection.

So my question is, has anyone ever developed lactose when pregnant? Is this even a thing?

Any advice/tips on how to make this better would be much appreciated!

I developed a histamine allergy in and after pregnancy that lasted 10 years! Still have to be careful. Our body’s change in many ways!

You can also get lacteeze tablets if you have dairy and see if they help.

Can you take these when you're pregnant?

I felt 10x better after giving up dairy, it's actually pretty easy these days. My sinusitus and IBS disappeared completely.

Plus the dairy industry is really grim and cruel 😕.

I developed mild lactose intolerance when I was pregnant with DC1. It went away immediately after the birth!

I developed lactose intolerance in my 30s. Took me ages to figure out it wasn’t “just” IBS. Used to suffer from nausea and have awful gut symptoms.

Since you’ve had a bug recently it could be temporary. If I were you I’d lay off the dairy for a bit and maybe try again after the baby is here.

I like oat milk for tea/coffee. For yoghurt and desserts the Coconut Collaborative brand do some lovely stuff. In fact it’s really easy to find good substitutes for basically any dairy product.

Ohhh! I have bad sinuses too! Have done for years and I'm on a spray every day by the doctor! I'll keep an eye for that to see cutting out dairy makes that better!

It really is, isn't it? :(

That's great news. I hope that's the case with me!

Can I ask, where your symptoms similar to mine?

Thanks for the tip! I'm also in my 30s and have abused dairy for years. Massive cheese lover. Finally my body must be rejecting it! Never thought I'd say that.

I usually take sugar free almond milk when I'm being really healthy but with this pregnancy I've let things slide. I had almond milk all week last week and felt so much better!

Will definitely start again tomorrow and try and go dairy free!

It will be the food poisoning that triggered it, happens often and especially if you are over 30.
Some people get to mid thirties and slowly start becoming lactose intolerant without any trigger.

I have read this much lately after doing some research. Really interesting how that happens.
