Extreme hip pain-help!

I’ve had occasional hip pain for a few years, usually when i’ve been out walking for a long time or sometimes when sleeping on my side. Yesterday i woke up with extreme pain in both hips and across my lower back. It’s not got any better and it’s hard to do anything at all. Moving, sitting even rolling over in bed are very difficult and painful. I’ve referred myself to physio this morning and am taking painkillers but what can I do to help and what has caused this? It’s really awful!

Are you fairly flexible? I have very similar pain and it's due to hypermobility. The only thing to help it is strengthening exercises NOT stretching, in fact the yoga I was doing was aggravating the issue.

I saw everyone including GP, physio, Chiro and the only one who made any difference or helped me understand the issue was an osteopath. So even if you're not HM I'd definitely recommend a private appointment with a good osteo if you're able to do so.

That is awful @MaydinEssex . If you don’t mind me asking, why did the surgery result in a loss of leg length?

Thanks so much to everyone who has replied. I’m going to try and get a GP appointment as soon as possible. Not easy though, my practice is great but it’s a 3 week wait for routine appointments and telephone roulette for same day. I’m being investigated for sjogrens syndrome atm and have only very recently been diagnosed with high blood pressure. Feels a bit like I’m falling apart!

It deteriorated really quick. Before I had my op, my femoral head had crumbled away, my consultant asked me what I had done, he thought I'd been in a car crash or something, but it literally went from feeling painful to collapsing in a year, my leg was so much shorter, they tried to lengthen it during my operation but they couldn't. It's really been life changing though, it's wrecked my mobility, I can hardly walk now, if I go out I have to use a mobility scooter

Use your Bupa to see the physio and ask them to refer you to a hip doctor for an MRI.

I had hip pain (one sided) and saw a physio for 4 weeks before he referred to hip specialists. I also saw a GP who prescribed cocodamol.

Turned out it was a fracture, I saw the hip specialist on a Monday evening, MRI on Wednesday and surgery on the Friday. Luckily I had Bupa cover so in the end it was a very quick diagnosis from the point of seeing the hip guy but an MRI during the first week would have saved a lot of pain.

Not saying yours is a fracture as it’s both sides but an early MRI given you have Bupa would be my recommendation.
