Ptosis surgery

Runaround50 · 19/03/2023 10:54

Has anyone had surgery for a ptosis on their eye? I've developed Horners syndrome, causing my left eye lid to droop. I'm unhappy with the appearance, but can't really afford to pay 4 K . Nhs won't do it, unless my vision is impaired.

Thanks

What's the underlying cause OP?

Runaround50 · 19/03/2023 19:39

@underneaththeash well that's the 6 million dollar question. No one seems to know the cause.

I've had scans and X-rays and no cause found. I've got nerve damage in my left arm and disc damage in my spine. I have no tumours or obstructions apparently.

That's annoying OP. I'm an optometrist, so we just refer and most of my patients will come back with a resolved ptosis without surgery. Usually it's quite mild (the ptosis).
Are you under anyone for your spine and arm issues? That could be a possible solution.
Ptosis surgery is usually pretty successful if the muscle isn't damaged (which yours isn't), but you have unresolved innovation issues.
I assume your bloods are okay - vit B12 deficiency can cause it.

I had ptosis surgery - not for Horner’s though. My left eyelid was covering my pupil, so NHS accepted me for treatment. The first surgery didn’t work, so I had to have it done again 2 years later (thanks to Covid).

Runaround50 · 20/03/2023 17:38

@underneaththeash I saw a private consultant ( who also works for the NHS) and he thought the arm and spine issues might be connected.
I'm meant to be getting an additional scan to double check the neck area again.

I'm under no one at present. NHS said come back in 6 months, but they weren't concerned, as the scan showed no cause ( idiopathic?)

Something has to have caused that lid to drop though? It's too coincidental for the arm and eye issues to develop surely? There's some disc damage to my spine apparently.

Different cause but I have ptosis in both eyes (one worse than the other) caused by Myasthenia Gravis. It doesn't affect my vision and I'm still allowed to drive which is the main thing. I don't like the impact on my appearance but I have got used to it . I would feel very differently if it impacted my vision though

SweetSakura · 20/03/2023 17:44

(I also have weak arms/neck/legs and problems with my speech and swallow - they all bother me more than the ptosis)

Runaround50 · 20/03/2023 17:45

@SweetSakura yes it's not an easy one to adjust to. I find it very odd and because it's one eye only, well I don't like it, to be truthful.

I know. I can't totally understand. It really affects how I look. Unfortunately I am loads of steroids too now so have a really swollen face as well. I try and avoid mirrors Grin

I hope you get answers, definitely keep pushing. It does seem like the issues could all be connected. I know from my own experience that getting answers can be long and gruelling!

Runaround50 · 20/03/2023 17:59

@SweetSakura yes it's like banging your head against a brick wall trying to get answers from these medics!

I have got melasma all over my blooming face, so I also avoid mirrors at all costs!

Oh well.. could be worse 🤦‍♀️
