Meniscus knee injury...when did you go back to exercise?

I've got some issue with my right knee. I can walk fine, I can function fine, but it's not right. It was very swollen and painful at the beginning of the week (after being sore for a few weeks). Saw a physio, did ice and ibuprofen and the pain/swelling is a lot better. But it still aches when I go upstairs etc. Now pain is a bit at the back as well as at the sides - it's not a sharp pain...Physio said maybe meniscus and some osteoarthritis is being aggravated as well.

But I'm desperate to go back to exercise. It's been a week. Realistically, what am I looking at?

I tore my meniscus in 2020 at the beginning of lockdown. It was a clear loud pop and excruciatingly painful. I was completely unable to move or weight bear for several days. Treatment was Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation.

With regular physio, I was able to walk slowly within a couple of weeks for short periods but it was several months before I could walk comfortably and a lot longer before I could exercise.

My job involves being on my feet for several hours at a time and my knee is still unstable. If I've over used it or omitted my physio I need to wear my knee support.

Try some regular knee exercises, easily found online. They seem really simple but make a huge difference.

That sounds awful, @Meceme - I'm so sorry.

Yes, I've been doing exercises. I haven't torn it, but I guess I need to be careful that I don't overdo it too soon and therefore make it worse...

Thanks, mostly all well now.

Take your time, keep up with the exercises and listen to your body. Stop when discomfort becomes painful. It will get better. Build up the muscles supporting your knee stability, strap or support if necessary.

Good luck, hope you recover quickly.

I did mine and a hamstring tendon tear just before the first lockdown and it’s still not right. It wasn’t helped by the lack of proper rehab during covid, but it’s not something to rush anyway, do the physio but don’t try to get back to ‘normal’ exercise too quickly.

No, I won't. Thanks all. Wishing everyone strong bodies!
