Reactions to contraceptive pill Dd13

MY daughter started her period almost 3 years ago. Over the last 8 months, the build up to her period has been very difficult- increasing nausea, lightheadedness, dizziness. The 24 hours before her period started would be the worst and she would be very nauseous and dizzy with a lot of pain.

She started taking the Bimizza pill and this definitely balanced out. She has had far fewer of these symptoms. However, her mental health seems to have gone off a cliff. She is very anxious- mainly about becoming ill. For background she is coeliac and has had some illness but nothing out of the ordinary. She is also incredibly emotional, finding relationships difficult and people very irritating. Everything upsets and annoys her. She is aware and wants help.

We have been looking into CBT as we thought it was anxiety related however I have just stupidly realised this all coincides roughly with starting the pill. My husband spoke to the gp who wants her to finish this pill packet and see what happens. However I’d love to know if others have this experience themselves or with their teenagers? Looking online gives a mixed response as to whether this could be related or not.

My DD, now an adult, went on the combined pill for the same reason. The first one she was on for a few months and she really struggled with low mood, crying a lot and elevated anxiety levels. She then tried the mini pill, but she bled constantly on that. She's tried a few more brands of combined pill, and has now found one that seems to suit her.

Thank you @Allthegoodusernamesareused that is really helpful to hear. The GP was keen for her to complete 3 months but I’m seeing her get worse as the days go on just now.

My periods are extremely painful and heavy. Suspected endometriosis but awaiting a laparoscopy. I refuse to go back on hormonal contraception due to how it affected my mental health even though GPs claim it’ll help with my endo. I was on the pill from around 19-21. I had bad anxiety whilst on the pill and this disappeared after I stopped taking it.

It’s great that your Dd doesn’t have painful or heavy periods, and for that reason I would take her off the pill. It’s not worth the damage to her mental health. When she wants to use it as a form of contraception, then she could try other brands or the mini pill.

I had the same with the pill and it’s only after I moved to a non-hormonal coil that I realised I had a completely different personality.

as in I was a horrific nightmare and just thought I was naturally miserable and short tempered.

and honestly my periods were still heavy on them. Now I just take mefenamic acid when they start and it’s much easier
