My dp of nearly 15 years has in the last couple of years developed a REALLY REALLY loud clicking jaw when he eats.

Seriously, I try so hard for it to not bother me, but every single mealtime, I cannot enjoy my food. Click click click. It is the noise of the click, it is so loud and sort of grates in his jaw. Like bones grinding and clicking, every chew of his food.

I have had enough of it.

I love him dearly, but O M F G. I just want to eat without this noise that sends me on edge and no matter how hard I try to ignore it, I hear nothing else but it.

And, not to mention the chewing with mouth open, slurping everything single mouthful. You may think, soup, something with a sauce. No. Anything, anything at all. I mean who slurps a chip or a burger?

feel horrible writing that. But, I can’t take another meal.

LTB

I would kill him. Mine has a clicking jaw but eats with mouth closed as he knows I have mysophonia.

pinkfondu · 15/03/2023 20:21

Has he has it checked out?

Workinghardeveryday · 15/03/2023 20:23

@crossstitchingnana drives me crazy seriously and I can’t even say anything!

Today I was wfh in dining room. He was in kitchen. All I could hear was the click click. Every second.

How can he even enjoy his own food?!! I couldn’t bare it

I have a clicking jaw, but not when chewing, just when opening my mouth wide. Every dentist visit they ask me about it and if it bothers me…there are treatment options available, but mine doesn’t impact me.
dies it bother your dp? Do you think he’d seek treatment?

He is the sort of person who is forced to the doctors.

I can’t imagine how I would feel if it happened when we kissed!!

I had a clicking jaw I merrily ignored for years.. then developed TMJ... the pain is something else. I'd suggest you get him to speak to his dentist.

There was a thread on a few days ago discussing the most efficient ways to hide a body. I’ll try to find it for you…

I’ve had a clicking jaw for about 25 years and 2 instances in that time where I’ve had severe pain and restricted movement. Incidentally I got a plastic retainer to wear at night because I was having issues with my fixed retainer - practically an instant cure. My dentist had said that night guards don’t really do anything to help but it was fabulous for me

My jaw used to click really badly when I ate. If it's any consolation your dh probably finds it just as annoying as you do and embarrassing, I know I did. Mine went away on its own and never clicks now.

Sorry meant to say, I honestly don’t think he has any idea how loud it is.

It is every chew. The kids have mentioned it to me as we usually eat together at teatime. They haven’t said so, but I think they feel the same.

May I ask, how long did it last?

I think I just thought it would get better, but has been so long now.

I really don’t think it bothers him or realises how loud it is. He is rather deaf after lots of ear infections as a child

I had a TMJ dysfunction after biting on something hard. There are physio exercises for itthat I don't do given to me by my dentist. Wearing a mouth guard at night does seem to help too. Google TMJ dysfunction exercises for more.

In the meantime, eat separately?

DewinDwl · 15/03/2023 20:55

I've had an off-a -on clicking jaw since childhood. Your husband's sounds quite extreme if you can hear the clicking with every chew. Something is not right in the joint, and quite often it can be helped. For me it was an osteopath and physio - they helped me to deal with all the tension I carry in my neck muscles which was having an impact on my poor jaw. It is miles better now.

I understand your irritation - he really needs to have it looked at because it won't get better on its own. I wonder if the hearing issues are related.

GlassBunion · 15/03/2023 20:58

So what is he supposed to do about this?

I've got a clicky jaw. There's nothing that can be done for it. I hate it. Wish it would fuck off. Had it for nearly 50 years. Doctors and dentists know about it.

It doesn't hurt me and it doesn't affect my ability to eat.
Should I not have a relationship in case it annoys them? Luckily I'm married to someone who shrugs it off and accepts it.

physwizz · 15/03/2023 21:00

It is actually worth seeing a physio for this as it can sometimes be sorted out

Workinghardeveryday · 15/03/2023 21:11

Oh come on, I am not being mean here.

As a family we have lived with it for a long time. I personally never show any irritation to the noise even though it spoils every meal btw I have made by scratch because the tone of the click makes my bones shudder. It goes right through me.

Shame on me for making a post asking for advice and help.

Thank you, he did ask his osteopath a while ago while visiting for something else. They gave him exercises which he hasn’t followed ☹️

You need to line him up with the the food mashing bloke from the other thread and shoot them both.

😂🤣, yes you maybe right!!

His table manners have always irritated me before the fog horn jaw click.

think, chewing with mouth open, filling mouth with far too much food and then whilst chewing trying to cram more in. Slurping everything. Not joking he slurps crisp and sounds like he is chewing rubble without the clicking jaw on top.

knife and fork in wrong hands. Talking with all that food in his mouth.

I can’t stand another meal. I feel like such a bitch!

I've just had jaw surgery, mine dislocated when I spoke and ate. I had no discs, cartlidge etc left. It's absolutely agony. I don't know how he keeps. You can't hear mine chew I when but if you were ear to ear to me you could. But then tbh I've spend months on soft food and liquid. Isn't he in pain?
