How to get olive oil in my ear?

I think I have hardened ear wax and have been advised to put a few drops of olive oil in my ear.

I have plenty of olive oil, but no dropper thingy. Would a calpol syringe work? It's all I can find do you think it's suitable.

Also how many days before I can expect some movement?

Syringe would would fine. But you don't need much, only a few ml will fit!
Or get someone to drop some in from a spoon if there's someone else there?

When this happened to me, I was advised to warm the oil first. I popped it in the microwave for a few seconds and just poured it in with a teaspoon.

That’s what I use. Warm oil twice a day for at least a week.

isthewashingdryyet · 14/03/2023 19:38

Don’t warm it, you could burn yourself badly
body heat will warm it quick enough

lmnabc · 14/03/2023 19:39

My mum used to do this for me when a child. She warmed the teaspoon (not the oil) then dropped it in.

Calpol dropper. I decant some into a ramekin and warm it on a radiator for half an hour, I wouldn't dare try the microwave but I am risk averse.

I had this, used to warm up the bottle in my bra - the pharmacist suggested that Grin. Apparently if it's too cold it can make you dizzy.

I'd use the calpol dropper!

If you don't have a handy medicine syringe in the house The Ordinary sell nice droppers (so lots of other places must too).

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 14/03/2023 19:42

You may get lucky and get movement within two or three days. Or it might take a bit longer.
I had very impacted sporner corner worthy ear wax, which ended up taking olive oil drops and bicarb drops morning and night for the whole month and four trips to the hearing centre before it was cleared. (Both ears and omg the world was noisy afterwards!) I now attend annual wax sucking sessions.

Yirk · 14/03/2023 19:42

Most chemists sell the droppers

greenacrylicpaint · 14/03/2023 19:42

look up opticians with audiology in your area. they will suck out your ear and have a quick look if all is ok.

GandhiDeclaredWarOnYou · 14/03/2023 19:43

Lie on your side before you squirt it in with the Calpol syringe.

Lavendersquare · 14/03/2023 22:51

Thanks everyone I've had a go with the calpol syringe, will keep this up in the hope that it sorts things out.

I use Earol - it’s like an olive oil spray.

Isuppose · 14/03/2023 23:19

Just warm very slightly and put it on a piece of cotton wool and place inside your ear. Lie down so the oil can trickle into your ear.
