Hi everyone, I'm sick with the stomach bug really unwell & also 20 weeks pregnant. There's no way I could go to work, I'm being sick every 20 minutes and have a temp. But I do have a warning for my attendance. Honestly it's not bad at all, but to my company policy it is. I'm terrified to ring in sick and don't know what to do. I'm scared I pass the bug onto someone else & as I work in a customer service job there's no way I can talk to customers all day without having to excuse myself to be sick, what should I do???? I don't want to lose my job!!!

Also, a few of you said they can't put pregnancy related sickness down as regular sickness? I was off twice due to preg sickness before and they've put it down as that. This is why my attendance is 'bad' Should this also not of happened?

I meant they put it down as a regular sickness.

@newmummie where are you located? The laws vary by country.

I was off work absolutely loads due to pregnancy illness, lots of individual days etc. They aren’t allowed to discipline you for it although you will still get your pay docked as with any other sickness absence. Are you in a union? You can also call ACAS.

please keep records of any conversations, emails, phone calls with your manager.....my manager became increasingly Sh!!!tty once i returned to work after mat leave around sickness issues and i eventually left (...found out later she'd also been bullying other people). For anyone who doesn't have pregnancy as a factor, to be pressured to go into work when you have a stomach bug (which are acutely infectious) is disgraceful behaviour but I likewise had a workplace with a sickness policy like that so I understand!!! Please prioritise your health and the health of your baby.

No that should not have happened.

Do you have emails or any paperwork?

turnthebiglightoff · 14/03/2023 10:38

Where do you work, OP? What do you do?

Mylittlesandwich · 14/03/2023 11:47

I had PGP and was off sick loads. I was off at least once a week for over 2 months. Obviously my pay was impacted but I was never called in for disciplinary. They can't fold it against you in that sense and they can't fire you over it.

How did it go OP? I hope you're feeling better today

Ask to see their risk assessment for you if they challenge you ? They should have one in place
