since DC2 16 months ago my cervix is at the opening to my vagina (certainly less than 1cm inside)
When I need a poo it pushes into the vagina and feels like it is going to exit from the wrong hole (although there is no way it could) so I have to push hard against the perineum to re-route to the correct exit.

I have had a really bad cough for the last 3 weeks and it feels like it has made it worse.
Do I have to see my doctor is there something that I could do myself.

I have been doing pelvic floor exercises and have no bladder issues just feels like the bottom is falling out of my world IYKWIM

Help!?!?

You poor thing! I think you do definitely need to go to your doctor about it, it doesn't sound like something you can fix with a few pelvic floor excercises. Don't suffer any longer, it sounds like it's affecting your quality of life, and it must surely be affecting your sex life too.

MrsMattie · 11/02/2008 15:50

It sounds like some kind of prolapse? You should definitely see your GP.

JingleyJen · 11/02/2008 16:00

Do you have a good relationship with your doctor? A trip there could be a good thing.

JingleyJen · 11/02/2008 17:18

someone on here had an electrical thing she was going to use for her pelvic floor muscles - not sure who it was though?

loopylou6 · 11/02/2008 17:38

hi PP it sounds like u have one of these

Annner · 11/02/2008 20:05

Hello there!

It's a lot more common than you think! If you go to your GP, they'll refer you to a gynae, who'll have a proper look.

If you push for a referal to an obstetric physio, they will be able to help you to maximise the effect of how you do your exercises. She'll be able to check that you are doing them properly. I have been recommended a tens machine and -err- cattle prod, which is helping.

The Tens machine works with a series of sets of exercises: some you have to work with, others you just leave the machine in to get on with it.

They may also suggest surgery, but this is always a last resort.

Don't continue to suffer: however decrepit it is making you feel (and I feel about fifty, instead of 36!) it can be helped and improved.

merlotmama · 11/02/2008 23:30

If your cervix is at the opening of your vagina, you have a uterine prolapse as well as a rectocele.... as I guess, from your name, you have figured out for yourself.

Having a cough will make it worse as will constipation and certain exertions e.g. lifting. Not easy to avoid with a 16 month old!

Although pelvic floor exercises won't cure it, they are worth doing.

I would get along to the GPs asap to discuss options. If your cervix protrudes it can be uncomfortable and can cause further probs due to chafing.

prolapsepolly · 11/02/2008 23:40

thanks for your responses,
in reality is there anything that anyone can do?
I am quite private about things like that so if they are going to say - hey you have had 2 kids get over it - then I would prefer not to show them my bits.. IYKWIM

Certainly difficult not to cough at the moment MM need to see Dr about painful chest and bad cough so I guess I could mention it but just don't want to go showing it unless there is a point.

So not knowing other ladies intimately - how far inside is everyone elses cervix?

I have had a mild prolapse since dd1 which initially got worse with 2nd pg but then improved as womb was pulled up.

I would say my cervix is about 4cm inside and has never protruded since the early stages of my 2nd pg 10 years ago.

WhenI asked my dr about it about 3 years ago he told me that pelvic floor exercises would stop it getting worse but not cure it. I would bite the bullet and see you dr.

ShinyHappyPeopleHoldingHands · 12/02/2008 00:11

My cervix is waaaaay more than 4cm inside!! Am I abnormal then?? And aren't most penises considerably larger than 4cm???!!! Or have I just been lucky in life?

fedup1981 · 12/02/2008 01:06

Before childbirth, generally the cervix is high, at least the depth of your middle finger up. Mine is still just out of reach BUT it feels slightly lower during sex.

I realise you're a private person, and I'm not going to belittle your desire for privacy about suh a sensitive issue, but this prolapse is not your fault. You aren't dirty or bad for having it happen to you. They're common, as common as a bad tear or urinary (or even fecal) incontinence after childbirth. You can even get them for other reasons such as being overweight or elderly. My mum had one, after 5 kids.

Your doctor will definitely have seen it before, you don't deserve to suffer for any longer with it, you've had 16 months of difficulty by the sounds of it. Ask for a referral to a gynaecologist, they'll respect your privacy and talk through what you can do to fix it.

Why don't you start a thread asking how many namechanging MNetters have had a prolapse? I think you'll be surprised.

kutilputil · 12/02/2008 01:43

hi, if it helps i have both rectal and bladder prolapse.diagnosed thanks to luvly ladies on mumsnet and finally saw doctor last week and have had an urgent referral to gyno next week!gp said it can be fixed and isn't a major job so i'm hopeful and you should be too.i have had this for two years since birth of my son and spoke to no one about it as i thought this happens and its nt fixable...it has affected my bowel movements, my weeing, my sex life even to the extent i cant keep a tampon in for long!sorry to be so graphic, but like you i dont like people nosing about down there, childbirth was bad enough...but my life will not be normal until its dealt with, and even if nothing is cured at least i can say i tried...pls go get it checked out.good luck

saralou · 12/02/2008 17:48

hi!

i'm also gonna tell you to see your gp!

this is most definitely treatable, no-one will say tough luck, it's what happens when you have kids (although this does happen when you have kids!)

3 options should be offered to you... ring pessary and physio (works like a shelf to support it back up their) this will not fix it, but will enable you to poo properly, have sex... needs changing every 6 months, can fall out!

they can also offer surgery... will fix it, but three months off - no heavy lifting/housework/driving. prolapse can come back.

or you can opt to do nothing, leave it as it is and manage the symptoms!

goodluck! don't be embarrassed, it is terribly common (else i'd be out of a job) it can affect so much of your day to day life!

JingleyJen · 12/02/2008 18:33

saralou what do you do for a living?

saralou · 12/02/2008 19:01

Mammina · 13/02/2008 19:46

think i'm there too - off to consultant next week, after 2 years of thinking i just had recurrent thrush (???idiot, i know). does anyone have any suggestions about what to do to soothe the soreness? wish i could just slap on some magic numbing cream - is this what our poor babes feel like when they get nappy rash?

Surroundedbysnot · 13/02/2008 19:53

hang on mammina - you're describing something different again, aren't you??
