4 month old DS passed blood and mucus - what do I do????

Hello everyone, not sure whether I need to be worried about 4 month old DS3 or not.

He is completely breastfed.

Yesterday afternoon he did a rather greenish poo. I have had a mild tummy upset myself, caused I think by eating too much fruit on Sunday, so I wasn't particularly worried. But then he did a VERY green poo, and then after his bath another green poo which was also contained mucus and lots of streaks of blood.

This morning his poo has returned to being yellow although it is even more runny than the usual breastfed baby stuff. He is clearly not very well, but not desperately ill either - no fever, still feeding etc.

Does anyone have any experience of this?

It may be a tummy upset, but I think blood in his poo should be checked out. Try calling NHS Direct and see what they advise.

Not trying to scare you unnecessarily but you should get it checked. My DD2 had something called intersusception (sp?) when she was 6 months old. Symptoms were projectile vomiting and bloody nappy (like redcurrant jelly...sorry if this is TMI). It is caused when the bowel telescopes and was unblocked in hospital quite easily (without an operation) but took a while to diagnose, so she was dehydrated and quite unwell by then. The doctor who finally took me seriously said that if I as a mother was concerned, he was too.

I'd bypass NHS direct and call your surgery and ask to speak to the duty doctor. Big hugs.

Thanks everyone. lucysmum, that sounds horrible! Hope your dd2 made a full and speedy recovery. Will call doctors' surgery this afternoon and see if I can speak to one of the doctors.
