How common is getting an ecg?

My 16 year old has had 3in the past 2 year (all clear and all precautionary). Each time due to fast heart rates.

I managed to get all the way to 45 before getting one but I am wondering if they are just more common now as the GP surgery have access to them (there is even one in his school health centre)?

I think they are more common now, my son has one 10 years ago when he was 11 and my daughter a couple of years ago in her 20’s

MaoamAddict · 11/03/2023 20:10

I've probably had 20-25 (mid 30s, some existing health issues)

Starlightstarbright1 · 11/03/2023 20:14

My Ds 15 has had a couple.

WeCome1 · 11/03/2023 20:17

I think my eldest has had one, other two haven’t. DH and I have both had one (CO poisoning and electrocution).

The trouble with ECGs is they don't pick up intermittent issues. If it happens now and then they'll probably give him a 24 tape to wear and he can push a button when he feels it happen. Most tachycardia isn't dangerous though, I get it lots!

I had one in my early 20s. I was having an anxiety attack but didn't realise that's what it was, when they put a tracer on me they realised I had a heart murmur (unrelated to panic attack) so sent me for an ECG. Turned out to be an innocent murmer, nothing to worry about. I've since had 2 7 day tapes to record my heartrate due to palpitations/racing. All have been fine, it's good that the Doctors are so diligent.

LG93 · 11/03/2023 20:22

I've had a few (30) as I often get a racing resting hr (particularly when pregnant) so they run an ECG to make sure it's 'just' that and it always is, despite me telling them I'm prone to it they understandably don't want to take any chances

DH just had a medication review and although all ok has been sent for bloods and ECG. Think it's as he has a history of several early deaths in his family and he's approaching that age.

HelloDaisy · 11/03/2023 20:34

Did had one last week after she fell and banged her head. I’ve never known that before..

HelloDaisy · 11/03/2023 20:35

DD not did!

lljkk · 11/03/2023 20:36

Not common ime.
I had a CAT scan in 2009.

mondaytosunday · 11/03/2023 20:44

I had one when an ambulance was called (totally unnecessarily, but I had an ulcer on my leg that ruptured and blood was everywhere and the leisure centre I was at panicked, but all I needed to was to raise my leg for a bit). My daughter has had several but she's had some health issues (and us currently being assessed for MS). I don't think my son has had any, though maybe when in the ER in the USA at 12.

Findyourneutralspace · 11/03/2023 20:47

I have one every couple of years. I get heart flutters which are most likely anxiety/caffeine but my dad died of a heart attack in his 40s, so if I ring the doctor they just tell me to come in and have one for reassurance.

OhBeAFineGuyKissMe · 12/03/2023 09:14

It is good they are being more routinely used and hopefully pick up things before they become serious. I was just surprised he has been given them.

Went to doctor as virus taking a long time to shift. Blood taken as expected. But as his heart rate was 126 he also got an ecg.
