please share your best tips for dealing with horrible tickly coughing attacks and torn muscle

Having awful coughing attacks … sometimes so bad I vomit. The coughing is so bad and has caused a torn muscle and now I am anxious about the next coughing attack as the torn muscle is so painful when I cough.

Have been to the GP and he has prescribed painkillers.

What are your best tips for a torn muscle (right lower back/side) or dealing with a tickly cough?

Thanks in advance.

Things I have tried:

  • sucking jakeman’s throat sweets
  • sipping water constantly throughout day
  • honey/lemon drinks

for the torn muscle:

  • hot baths

Is there anything else I could try?
thanks for reading

You need to find out where the cough is from, is it a post nasal drip cough, if so you'll need prescription steriod nasal sprays

Is it from GERD or GORD, if so you'll need ant acids to try to treat that

Is it tight and dry around your throat, or is it from down in your lungs. Are you wheezinng at all, and if so, again is it down from your lungs or centred in your throat

its all very well the GP giving you pain killers, but you need to stop the cough. I speak as someone with chronic cough.

Good point @bellac11

It is seems to be coming from higher up rather than lungs. No wheezing but often get shortness of breath.

Chest xray was clear.

But I get it every time I get a cold, and the cough can linger for weeks after.

GP didn’t seem too concerned about the cough, just the torn muscle.

I did ask about my cough /shortness of breath and he has ordered further blood tests but have to wait one month to get blood tests done.

In the meantime, I have to try and get through a full-time job (teacher) and it is proving very difficult as the coughing attacks are pretty debilitating.

The doctor wont be concerned with the cough because its not his back muscles tearing to pieces everytime you're hacking up

I would ask for a referral to ENT. You could also ask for ant acids to see if this has an effect in case its GORD.

I have essentially suffered for 30 years with this, misdiagnosed with asthma, got much worse after a long virus around 8 years ago, mine is predominately post nasal drip/chronic non allergic rhinitis but lately due to an operation I may also have it combined with GERD which causes a similar cough (although I can tell the difference)

Its tiring, exhausting, hard on the stomach, hard on the back, makes your eyes water, makes people stare. Its awful. Plus wetting myself on occasion which is always nice.

@bellac11
I have found your posts really informative and helpful.

I wouldn’t have considered things like GERD for instance and you have made me realise it’s not normal and I need to pursue it with my GP.

Now I think about it, i have had it for over 10 years but it’s taken a sudden turn for the worse over the past year and it is getting quite difficult in daily life, especially my job.

I am sorry to hear you have suffered for so long. Are things better these days? Can i ask what are the things that help you most?

thanks again for sharing 💐

Well I rely heavily on the nasal spray, dont use a non prescribed one, you need a specialist steroid spray IF its post nasal drip

I was also taught some breathing exercises, breath in through your nose and blow out with your mouth 3x as if you are blowing out candles. Repeat this reguarlary and when you feel the cough coming on. The problem is that the cough is unpredictable and comes and attacks me before I can even think
Also if you have a little tickle and you think the cough is coming or you need to cough, try to swallow instead.

Lots of water obviously.

Now that I think I have this GERD I might need to up the ant acids but not sure yet.
