Has anyone decided not to go for a routine mammogram?

I'm curious to know . I have mine next week and will attend but last time was a nightmare as I was recalled and health anxiety went through the roof . Luckily no cancer . I was reading that about 30% of women don't attend Apparently mammograms don't pick up everything and aren't foolproof , but surely they are better than nothing .

@Manybeards thats true no one forces you to go, but my god they are patronising when you phone to cancel and ask to be removed from the list - the first time I called, they even refused to remove me from further notifications as “I might come round to the idea at a later date.”
Took two further cancellations before they finally took me off the notification list.

No because I personally think the risks of overdetection leading to the whole programme of treatment for something that would never cause any issues are too high.

It isn't linked to particularly excitingly better survival rates/outcomes overall so I am happy to wait and see. If I find a lump then I will have one. Until then, no

So you’re claiming that staff are rude and treat women badly but you’ve never actually been ? I hope a mammogram practitioner comes along to tell you how fucking insulting you’re being

omg I know!

And then I was told not to worry I could always still have a scan if I needed one even though I was opting out of screening.

Well, duh! Yes I would expect so.

But it’s still a choice

I haven't personally heard one positive experience from friends.
I think my posts were clear that I was only speaking personally about the letters and forced appointments... but I am not remotely surprised that the attitude continues into the clinic.
Some of my friends cried they were treated that badly.

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 09/03/2023 17:31

@Manybeards no one is saying otherwise. It is choice to refuse to go for routine screening that a lot of women are choosing to make - for very valid personal reasons.

I’ve never gone for one. I’ve always had really sore breasts and the tales I’ve heard about how painful the process is have made me sure I don’t want one. My mum died of breast cancer and if that’s what’s in store for me, well so be it.

But it's not just you is it. Your family has to go through it with you

I had my first one recently, and I was worried as I had also heard other women talk about finding it painful. It was totally fine ! Very slightly uncomfortable for the count of five, but only like someone gripping your arm a bit tighter than comfortable.
I went private, I don’t know if that meant they took their time ? The whole experience was so much better than in my imagination. The all female team were excellent .

And?

JussathoB · 09/03/2023 17:33

ArcticSkewer · 09/03/2023 17:26

oh of course, I must be a man. Silly me. I forgot women don't mind being treated like small children.

It isn’t about being treated like a child. It’s about efficient use of resources and encouragement to come for screening, when some women might be too ‘busy’ with work or caring responsibilities to look after their own health, or too worried after reading the type of exaggerated nonsense that some pps have written on this thread.

If that’s relating to me then no, you haven’t. As previously stated I’ve had two due to breast lumps which luckily turned out to be cysts.

JussathoB · 09/03/2023 17:34

Why on earth would the staff who do mammograms be uniquely rude and unpleasant?
Trolls on here spreading misinformation

Are my breasts more special than my cervix? That doesn't get appointments made on its behalf.

Apparently 1/3 of appointments made (without request) are not attended - according to this thread anyway.

I dunno ... maybe they could try letting women make their own appointments?

I've had a few mammograms. Usually my breasts don't hurt but before one mammogram I happened to be going through a period of very painful breasts, so much so that I went to the GP about it. The mammogram was due anyway, so I went along to it practically cradling myself as my breasts were so sore. All I had to do wax tell the staff and they couldn't have been kinder and more careful with my mammogram. And, weirdly, it wasn't any more uncomfortable than on the occasions when my breasts weren't hurting.

I would encourage you to try at least one mammogram, but totally understand it is your choice one way or another.

As you replied to my comment on the pro- choice post. You replied to me note or are you still referring to me as a troll ?

Exactly the same happened to me. Terrifying wait, biopsies, more mammograms and scans. Another terrifying wait and the all clear.
Went again 10 days ago and dreading the results arriving but I still went and always will.
