Help me make a dental decision......

Hi
Had a deep filling last year, started playing up again, apparantly nerve is dying. Options are either a root canal (mega bucks and might be tricky as root is bent) or extraction with sedation (much cheaper). I'm not worried about losing a tooth but hate the idea of the procedure. Dentist said I can have laughing gas! Several years ago I had a valium injection when I had a lot of dental work to be done, that was great, no pain and no worries either! Any dentists out there or anyone had a tooth out recently? My only memory of having a tooth out is when I was 9 and it was awful!

Hi,
I've had a couple of teeth out over the past 2 years and although i'm absolutely terrified of going to the dentist i did'nt actually find the procedure too bad, just a little bit of twisting and pulling. The worst part for me was a little discomfort afterwards which was eased with painkillers. I personally would prefer to have an extraction rather than a filling.

good luck.

Might be best to have it out. DP has a tooth that has been root canalled and crowned and the crown is constantly falling out, he's decided to have it removed.

well i am having one done in march. after a bad expierence I am having sedation.
ds was sedated to have a cap done and he was just very sleepy. then "drunk"
I would have the sedation if I was you.

I had root canal a couple of weeks ago. As I'm unable to open my jaw very wide and my dentist has rather large hands, he couldn't do it. I've got an appointment tomorrow to have it taken out . It has not hurt since he tried the root canal though so I may ask him to fill it. Root canal didn't hurt at all, I managed to find an NHS dentist that did it for free rather than my normal dentist who went private so it hasn't cost a penny.

Why not ask to be referred to hospital to have the tooth extracted. You will be asleep then. And it's free! Personally, I think I would rather have root treatment than an extraction, only cos i'm a baby. Thats why I would go to hospital and be put to sleep to have a tooth out

Glammama · 11/02/2008 17:23

I too, second the idea of asking to go to hospital. I had wisdom teeth removed whilst under valium at Guy's in London. Didn't cost a penny. Good luck.

Sedation is great. I have had it couple of times and, for me, it is like I am asleep - I have no memory of having anything done. If it isn't a really obvious tooth have the extraction.

Having had a root canal which took about 4 appointments and an extraction which took 10 minutes I know which I would chose.

I've been told that having teeth pulled out messes with your pelvic floor muscle???

Glammama · 11/02/2008 17:31

I've been told having kids, lots of sex and no kegels is bad for your pelvic floor muscles, surely not having teeth out?

Mind you, I've had 22 teeth out (milk and adult due to small jaw) and I have to be very careful when laughing

sylvev · 12/02/2008 09:51

Thanks for your thoughts and advice. I think I'm going for extraction, pelvic floor muscle already messed with, avenanap, so no worries there!

Niecie, 2shoes, was the sedation laughing gas? Is this the same as gas and air during birth?

Glammama, I had valium years ago but this was at the dental surgery. Do you think it's better done in hospital?

Can you tell I'm nervous....off to do deep breathing....
