Excessive night sweats

,

I was wondering if anyone has experienced similar.

For the last couple of weeks my husband has been sweating excessively every single night. He's drenched. I touched him in my sleep last night and my clothes ended up wet, that's how bad it is.

Earlier this week, he complained of waking up to a nosebleed.

I never connected the two until tonight, when the sweating has affected his sleep. I googled excessive night sweats and the first thing that comes up is the NHS's page on non hodgkins lymphoma. Both excessive night sweats and noise bless are symptoms. He's not complained of inflamed lymph nodes, but what are the symptoms of that? How would he know? Do you think it's worth getting it checked out at the GP to rule it out?

Thanks in advance

Hi OP, I’m not a medical practitioner in any way but if you’re concerned about it (I would be as well) please see your GP and get a referral. From what you’re describing it does sound excessive and the nosebleed on top of that especially if it’s not something he usually has would also be causing me to call the GP. Sorry I can’t be of more help but that’s just my twopenny’s worth. It may be nothing but at least you’ll know - hope you get to the bottom of it.

I'd go to the GP, I had a relative with NHL a few years ago and massive night sweats were the major sign. It took a while for it to be diagnosed so the cancer had spread but relative is thankfully in remission now. A colleague also had it a couple of years later, again sweats were the major sign (and again fully recovered now!) It's worth at least getting it ruled out and if it is NHL, like everything, the sooner treated the better. I know you must be feeling scared, sending love x

PlainSkyr · 08/03/2023 05:58

NHL is one of the more treatable cancers, so don't panic. Also it's one of those that you can be in remission for life - doesn't keep coming back. Don't google too much but start investigations ASAP.

Thanks all. I'll try not to panic and nudge him to call the Dr's. @Eggling do you know how your relative did eventually get diagnosed? Is there's a specific test for NHL?

He'll hopefully be referred for a blood test and maybe a scan (mri or ct) and if needed a biopsy of any swollen lymph nodes.

Eggling · 08/03/2023 07:00

@Jfb23 exactly as @Mumof1andacat said, blood test then I think mri scan and then a biopsy. Treatment was chemo and radiation, it was unpleasant but over within about 5 months as I recall.definitely worth a GP visit and please do let me know if you or he have any more questions.

Also second the advice not to google, it's easy to get scared reading online but if it is NHL it really is one of the 'best' cancers to have. Hopefully it's something else even yuckier and easier to treat but best to get it checked out!

BeeBB · 08/03/2023 07:28

OP the Dr will do an exam, ask questions, arrange blood tests and will go from there.

Hi OP
DH had NHL. He didn't have night sweats the first time round, just pain in his abdomen due to enlarged lymph nodes. When he relapsed night sweats came.
Other symptoms - weight loss, fatigue.
It's best to get it checked out.
Good news is lymphoma is highly treatable. Some stages don't even need treatment and patients are on a 'watch and wait' pathway for years.
Good luck

Thanks everyone.

Now to have the conversation with DH when he finishes work. He had fallen back asleep and I googled whilst finishing off the night feed

Just a quick update. I told him what I'd found expecting him to tell me he thought I was over reacting but would call the Dr's anyway. His face kind of did an 'oh' reaction and he told me that's how his mate knew something was up (excessive night sweating) who later got a cancer diagnosis. I don't know if it was in the back of his mind all along, but he'll be phoning the Dr's tomorrow x
