neck vertebrae (injury)

Yesterday when lifting my disabled child out of his taxi, I bent forward to help him out of the car. He grabbed my neck and pulled.
I felt something "crack" and then intense pain when I straightened.

This morning I'm in agony after a very restless night.
The pain seems to be around the top vertebrae at the back of my neck (the bit where the bigger vertebrae bend at the top of the spine).
I can't turn my head either way (very minimal movement).

Would I be stupid to wait and hope it will correct itself?
I'm scared to go to the doctor after hearing about someone with the same symptoms who had dislodged something at the back of their neck. Apparently the doctor took hold of their head and yanked their neck back into place, which caused them to shout out in pain.
I should add this was several years ago (it was an older person telling the tale) and they may not do this now.

What (if anything) would the GP do?

If it was me, I would definitely want to get this checked out. Your neck and spine is not something to leave to chance. You could be storing up problems for the future if you don't ensure you get the right treatment or do the right thing now to help things heal.

It's extremely unlikely that the doctor will yank your neck. Even if they wanted to (they won't), you don't have to consent to it. It's your body, you can say no.

You may be better going to A and E as it will need an xray
