Is it normal for your chest to burn when you cough?

I've had a cough for the last couple of days. In the last couple of hours my chest has started burning when I cough. About 30 mins ago it reduced me to tears and I was shaking with the pain. Don't feel like I've got anything other than a cough/cold virus but the chest burning is incredibly painful. Is this normal? Is there anything I can do to soothe it?

That sounds like a possible chest infection, I have asthma and frequently get infections.
may be worth getting a gp appointment in case you need antibiotics.
I hope you feel better soon 💐

Thank you for your response. It's so painful and just came out of nowhere. It's like a hot poker in my chest.

Burning pain with cough can also be caused by acid reflux

I’m going the other way and going to say yes I’ve experienced this but in my experience it’s normally viral - a bit like when you have a viral sore throat but in your chest. I had something similar a few weeks ago, it did eventually turn into a chest infection but that was long after the burning stopped.

it’s clearly very painful though so probably is worth trying to check in with your GP.

I did think this also but wasn't sure of the likelihood due to it coinciding with a virus and high temp. Just dreading trying to get in with the GP!

It's a horrible pain that lasts about 10 seconds after in stop coughing and gradually disappears to a minimal underlying pain.

You might have irritated your trachea. Not uncommon OP. Worth getting checked out of you are worried.

I'm actually not worried but it is only in the middle of my chest so maybe that's what it is. Who knows. I just want the pain to go away.
