Agonising back pain

Any advice?
Ive had niggling lower back pain for several weeks- carried on with life/ work as recommended on the NHS website. I have a very physical job (self employed cleaner).

However at the weekend I tried to get up, felt like my back gave way (?) and couldn’t- the worst pain ever- lower back all down my leg- just horrific.

Im now on Naproxen, pregablin and coccodamol but can barely stand or walk without feeling sick with pain.

please can anyone advise? Is there an ongoing back pain thread on here?
I really need to return to work soon as I’m self employed. And get on with everything at home- two teenagers here.

Just feeling so desperate.

That was for @Oblomov23

So, finally I saw a doctor. A surgeon. Given an hours appointment, took Dh. He said he'd had back pain since he himself was 18 and that there was nothing that could be done other than learning to cope/live with it.

That's it.
Thanks for that!

This thread is so depressing. I am hobbling around with an osteoporotic spinal fracture atm. My consultant gave me a small supply of a reasonably good painkiller that won't further destroy my gut. She asked GP to continue. GP says no. Hospital also says no more from them. I can't buy it OTC.
Looking at trying to get a private prescription.
So fed up.

I agree it is impossible to exercise/ lose weight if you can hardly move due to pain. I live in terror of another fall/ broken hip, because I think that would kill me.

Try doing yoga. Yoga with Adrienne has several specifically for back pain. I really think a lot of back pain now is caused by poor posture, sitting too much, weak core muscles and being overweight. Also dehydration is a big cause of back pain.

I got bollocked bye the doctor for putting on weight. Well excuse me but my weight gain is due to my immobility FFS

NHS physio told me last week that I'm not ready for Pilates or yoga yet.

RafaistheKingofClay · 03/11/2024 16:05

Both physio and spinal team have said no to yoga. Pilates yes, yoga is always going to be no go.

Sorry, you are still in so much pain. @Oblomov24 they really have been crap.

Feel bad about sharing this but, I have slightly better news. Has spinal nerve root block the other week and it’s worked. The difference between constant pain and not constant pain is amazing.

MrsHGWells · 03/11/2024 17:36

@endofthelinefinally @Oblomov23 Have you tried napraxon? Get a gastro sensitive pill to help… this is the most easily accessible daily pain relief. Hope it helps.

justasking111 · 03/11/2024 18:35

My physio said no yoga just stick to the exercises.

Oblomov23 · 04/11/2024 20:47

@RafaistheKingofClay please don't ever apologise. We can all celebrate your minor success.

@MrsHGWells thanks, I have. I've been on 12 medicines, moving from paracetamol, to tramadol, gabapentin, Amitriptyline (which is an antidepressant, which I was cross about), to morphine. Nothing had helped much. I can't keep popping pills for the rest of my life.

Oblomov23 · 27/12/2024 20:37

I've finished physio.

I'm having 4 steroid injections into my back next week : L1,L2,L4 and L5.

I've been told by ngs there's nothing more they can do for me, I have to learn to live with it.

Thanks!

Crankyaboutfood · 28/12/2024 01:39

If you have never tried the Mackenzie method of physio read about it and maybe try it. It did wonders for me. There are also surgeries, though I think wait times are difficult in England. Remember you are your own best advocate. Wishing you no pain in the coming year.

justasking111 · 02/01/2025 22:11

Happy new year @SmileyClare and all

How's everyone doing?

RafaistheKingofClay · 03/01/2025 10:50

Much better since the steroid injection. Thanks @justasking111. it’s not perfect but the pain is definitely manageable now and I can do loads of stuff that I couldn’t do before. I can definitely see a way forward to doing more exercise and strengthening my muscles more. 🤞

How is everyone else doing?

justasking111 · 03/01/2025 14:15

Glad the injection worked. Keep on moving.

I sat around too much at Xmas, not good.

My stomach is playing up with the nsaids. So having to avoid them. Back complaining.
