Is this an ingrown toenail? Pic included!

I think that I have an ingrown toenail albeit the beginnings of one and looking for opinions as really not sure. The right side of my big toe gets a blister where the nail meets the skin and fluid come out if I push it. It's tender and seems to come and go which is why I'm not sure. See pic- anyone with better knowledge than me?

That looks painful OP! I don't know about ingrowing toenails as never had one - but I have had an infected toenail once. I got some liquid TCP and warm water - dunked the toe in there for a little while. Then gently squeezed the pus out and it was okay after that. But yours looks like a blister (clear liquid rather than pus) so I don't know! Someone else will come along and have more idea I am sure....

Definitely looks ingrown to me.

Starseeed · 05/03/2023 18:49

It looks pretty similar to the NHS pictures - it suggests some treatment here too:

I would say so any maybe fungal nail as well. Or it could be the pressure discolouring it.

That does look quite like Ds’s ingrown toenail did last summer. He needed a few antibiotics. Podiatrist tried cutting wee bit out but it didn’t work and he needed nail surgery to remove side of nail.

Meant to add pics

Yeah it's tender but not really painful. It is like a blister at the nail bed not at the end of the toe which is why I'm unsure whether it's ingrown. Might have to just make a podiatrist appointment. It seems to come and go since the summer.

After looking at nhs guidelines, it looks like I should leave the nail to grow out. Will save my money unless it gets worse. Thanks all

Yes, it is definitely ingrown. The side of the nail needs to be removed by a Podiatrist. You could try to cut the top corner yourself, just to try and get a bit of relief for now.

jclm · 05/03/2023 19:11

Yes, if you have the cash, I'd go straight to a chiropodist for private treatment x

stayingaliveisawayoflife · 05/03/2023 19:12

I used to get really bad ingrowing toe nails a lot. What worked completely was letting them grow long past the end of the toe then making sure I cut straight across and not in at the sides.

seconding advice for a podiatrist. definitely worth the money if you have it.
I had an ingrowing toe mail which was butchered by my GP years ago. it ended up with me crying in pain and in A&E, where they gave me the drugs they give people coming off heroin, the pain was that severe
When I had it on the other big toe, I went to a podiatrist, who sorted it with no fuss and no pain

Odiebay · 05/03/2023 19:21

Yes ingrown. Iv suffered with them. Put your foot in warm salt water which will clear and infection. When the skin is soft you can get a small piece of tissue or floss to put under the nail (or at the side) to encourage the nail to rise and grow out. Do not just leave it as it will 100% get worse and grow into your skin.

fajitaaaa · 05/03/2023 19:23

Try bathing in warm salt water

custardbear · 05/03/2023 19:31

I had ingrowing toenails for years , the pain is awful and the sides of my toes went weird shades of
Black. Now I'd definitely go to the podiatrist. I went a few years back when I felt it returning (mine grew out years ago - I spent the summer in open toe shoes - but definitely a podiatrist. I think my appointment cost me £35 so
Not expensive

GettingItOutThere · 05/03/2023 20:03

see a podiatrist.

also as a side note...SOME nhs trusts will do nail surgery for you (for free)!, worth asking
