Does this sound like GERD?

For many months now I have been getting the following symptoms:

  • upper back pain
  • heartburn
  • feeling like a lump is in my throat
  • choking feeling
  • tight esophagus
  • red, sore throat sometimes
  • breathing feels weird sometimes - not hard to breathe, just feels a bit odd.

Please be kind with your replies as I do suffer from anxiety and anyone telling me I'm about to die will make me panic 😂.

Does it sound like GERD?

The GERD/GORD issue. I was diagnosed 7 years ago as part of Systemic Sclerosis. I see a specialist at a regional centre for excellence and GERD is on all my medical records. I have only ever had it reffered to as GERD by any medical professional, so it most certainly is in use in the UK.
OP , your symptoms do sound like GERD, but they also sound a lot like anxiety. Ironically even if it is GERD the anxiety will make it much worse. When you go to the GP make sure you mention how anxious you are so they get the full picture and give you the most appropriate treatment.

@Bepis hi there, I know this was a little while ago but I just wanted to see how this panned out and if you got to the bottom of it. I am having the same symptoms for a week now. Lump in throat feeling, belching etc. it suddenly came on out of nowhere and is now over a week. I also worry a lot so was wondering if you could shed some light? Thanks

I think it sounds more like gastritis and/or a stomach ulcer. I have those symptoms and have just been diagnosed with both. I'd speak to your gp about getting an ultrasound , h pylori bacteria test and a endoscopy.

I've had all that. Diagnosis 5cm sliding hiatus hernia causes GERD I'm on omeprazole. Tried nexium a while ago because my scrip ran out with a seven day wait. It works fast.

You do need to adjust your diet though even with a prescription.

Hi everyone, just wondered if anyone might still be active here? Have anyone had problems swallowing too with other symptoms? Like feeling that your food pipe is too tight and you feel the food pass through.. bread js the worst for me and feels like it gets lodged midway to the stomach.

See a GP is my advice, symptoms vary

I've had all of these symptoms for quite a while, recently I was prescribed omprazole but that immediately made my heartburn so much worse. Currently waiting for an endoscopy appointment.

I think the nature of the symptoms do make you more anxious/stressed which probably has a knock on effect of making the symptoms worse.

I'm assuming GERD or a hernia but obviously it's hard not to think something much more sinister.
