What worked for your profunda/hip impingement?

Have been experiencing pain in right groin for several months especially when getting in/out of the bath, after sitting for a while. Finally had an xray.
Dr called today with results of hip xray- coxa profunda in both hips (socket deep) causing hip impingement.
She has said there’s nothing to worry about but am being referred to orthopaedic specialist.

Please could you tell me what treatments worked best for you?
I feeling anxious.
Thank you.

Hi OP. I was diagnosed with hip impingement after lots of fruitless physio over a couple of years (original mis-diagnosed as bursitis again and again!) and had a referral to the orthopaedic dept finally.

They diagnosed impingement as visible on the xray (and missed by the gp) and then treated with an xray guided steroid injection. The fact that this worked temporarily then worse off was a diagnosis in itself too. I then had an arthroscopic keyhole surgery to reshape both the top of the femur and the shape of the hip socket to stop them catching. It was a simple op, straightforward recovery and I've rarely had any pain since - that was 8 years ago. If that's the case and you have bilateral pain they may offer the op on one hip at a time if it's a relevant treatment in your case.

@DrMadelineMaxwell Thank you for your post. That’s fantastic that you rarely have pain nowadays!
The GP was not keen to offer an xray at first and I got a call from the secretary telling me to self refer to physio. I’m glad I pushed back because I have been on the physio before (for a different problem) and it didn’t help much.
The xray showed bilateral. My hips seem to be getting stiffer and stiffer.
May I ask how long the op including recovery time was?

They advised a 6 week recovery time off work. If I had a desk job instead of one where I'm on my feet all the time, I could have gone back earlier.
I was given crutches, but advised that I could weight-bear straight away.

The first night was v painful, but bearable with paracetamol.
About a week was sore.
Then it was ok after that!

The awkward thing was not being able to bend my hip more than 90 degrees for the 6 weeks. Slip-on shoes were a must.

Thank you for all the info @DrMadelineMaxwell
I am trying to read up on it all as much as I can but it is all very new to me.
Next step, orthopaedic referral… we shall see how long that takes!

From the other end of the scale:

After six months of sore hip, I decided it wasn't getting better on its own and spoke to a go. They recommended physio. I found the exercises difficult to start with, but I persevered and after a couple of months, the pain was gone.

I am so relieved. I hope you find something that helps soon.

somersetsinger · 04/03/2023 22:50

GP, not go. And it was the physiotherapist who suggested it was hip impingement.

anewbook · 05/03/2023 09:01

@somersetsinger thank you for sharing your experience.
great to hear the physio was a positive experience for you!
did you have an xray ? Do you keep the exercises up now to prevent the pain coming back?
sorry for all the questions.

I didn't have an x-ray. The physio asked lots of questions, then examined me, moving my hip around and feeling the area.

I must remember to wear stretchy clothes if I every have another appointment. I was wearing jeans so not very flexible and quite thick, but I didn't want to take them off.

I haven't kept up the exercises. I did them three to four times a week, but perhaps should have done every day. I forgot to ask how long I should do them as all the chat was about trying exercise first and coming back for clinics/x-rays if there was no improvement.

@somersetsinger
thank you, I will remember to wear stretchy clothes at my appointment!
