Fungal Toenail infection

Artyfarty555 · 03/03/2023 18:05

I’ve had a toenail infection since 2021 and as much as I’ve filed nails down used the liquid from the doctors it just won’t go. I have it on my right foot only and on 4 of the toes. It looks absolutely awful and l can’t wear sandals in the summer.
Has anyone cured it..it is really thick and discoloured and definitely not going.
considering going back to the drs to see if he’ll refer me ….but not sure where to. In the big scheme of things it’s hardly anything but if l could get rid of it I’d be so happy.
l did wonder if anyone had had their toenails removed completely as I’d even go down that route. Thanks to anyone that can help. X

Have you gone to a chiropidist instead of a doctor? I find them very good for filing the nails down once they start to look thick

Artyfarty555 · 03/03/2023 22:01

Yes, l have. A chiropodist has done this several times but unfortunately I think it’s gone beyond this now.
Thinking maybe having the nails taken off completely 🤔😢😟

Did the GP not suggest medication? Combination of this and then a podiatrist sorted mine. Podiatrist drilled dozens of tiny holes in my nail and gave me one spray for morning and one at night.

My NHS trust/ surgery wont treat fungal nail, not even a script, unless the toes/ feet are infected, or one has diabetes. I bought a dremel and use that to keep the nails in some sort of order. I believe, as already mentioned that the drilling of many small holes then topical treatment is the way to go. It's private for me and lots of money, which I haven't got.

The off the shelf stuff at the pharmacy hasn't worked, neither have the myriad of things suggested online like essential oils, garlic, vinegar with mother in it, vicks vapour rub or whatever.

There are pills that can be prescribed but they have some quite bad side effects for some people. The Toe Bro ( in the USA) on youtube is worth a watch, but it aint for the squeamish, can be like a horror show but the bloke is good and offers up some good advice and options.

File it, file it and file it again. File it until it’s pretty much filed off down to the skin underneath.
Use the anti fungal nail paint and file, file, file.
You need to keep in filing and using the paint as the infection may be in your shoes and you may keep getting re-infected.

Terbinafine anti fungal tablets
Regular blood tests as they can affect your liver.
Dh has used the tablets and blood tests have come back ok

The only thing that got rid of mine was losing the nail and so far it's not come back with the new nail. My son accidentally stood on my toe and the nail cracked - think it was already weakened by the fungal infection- then fell off.

laidbacklife · 03/03/2023 23:14

Ask your GP for Terbinafine tablets. Not everyone can take them but if you can then they will get rid of the infection within a few months.

My nails are awful due to psoriasis... could that be the issue?

Artyfarty555 · 04/03/2023 22:16

Thanks so much for the messages and information. The doctor gave me the paint on stuff and l used a battery operated nail file to grind down the nail…but the nail is so thick and yellow it seems to make no difference…well it hasn’t in the months I’ve tried. I’ve not asked for the tablets as wasn’t sure l fancied the problems that might come with them.
Having tiny holes drilled in does seem the way ahead but not sure l can afford it and l don’t suppose that is guaranteed?
Will go back to the doctor…not easy as appointments are hard to get and it’s not life threatening and ask for their advice.

Cric don’t think it’s that as it wasn’t mentioned when l went to the doctors initially and I don’t suffer from psoriasis.
