Nausea from Vit D supplements

I have low Vitamin D so the GP has prescribed supplements of 25000IU twice a week. For the first week or so I felt great, the aches and pains caused by my deficiency started to resolve. But then I started to get nausea and wind, my stomach was full of air and I was burping constantly.

I’ve been on the pills for about a month and the nausea has got worse and worse. I’m waking up in the middle of the night feeling like I’m going to vomit, and I spend 2hrs walking around the kitchen to shift the wind, burping repeatedly until the nausea relieves enough for me to go back to bed. The stomach pain is terrible.

Having spoken to the GP she advised to stop the pills and see if the stomach problem resolves. But it’s been four days and I’m still incredibly sick. Any advice? How long should it take for me to feel better if it is being caused by the pills?

That is almost twice the recommended dose, so no wonder you are feeling sick. I realise you are deficient in vitamin D but tbh I think a lower dose over a longer period might have been more sensible.
I was found to be suffering from vit D deficiency when I was diagnosed with a couple of autoimmune diseases 6 years ago. My consultant explained to me that a daily supplement of 4.000 IU would be adequate over a period of months in order to avoid side effects. It was effective within about 3 months and I continue to take a lower dose with monitoring annually.

How do I make this nausea stop? I stopped the pills four days ago but I still feel so sick that I can’t function.

I realise it’s a huge dose but it was prescribed by a GP?

I expect it will take a bit longer to settle down given you have been on such a high dose for a month. GPs prescribe lots of things. Some people will suffer side effects, some people might be allergic to prescription drugs, some drugs may not work. It seems that you cannot tolerate an extremely high dose of vitamin D so it is likely that the standard recommended dose will be better for you. It just might take a little longer to reach the optimum level in your body.

I was prescribed the same amount by a consultant.

Could the sickness be something else and the vitamin D a red herring.

I had more than that for ages and was fine but that doesn't necessarily mean anything

I am on them for life long, never had any sickness. Are you sure it's not something else?
