What pain relief for dry socket in the uk??

I’m in the uk and was diagnosed with a dry socket 2 days ago. I’m still in pain and iv been taking pain killers from over the counter and they are not helping but I feel 2 days after I should be almost at the end of this now but my dentist never prescribed any pain killers just said take over the counter ones I feel like such a wimp but it is nagging away all of the time. If you’ve ever had dry socket after a tooth removal, did your dentist give you pain relief or were you made to use over the counter

Go back to your dentist to check the ‘packing’ is still in the socket. Any dentist will see you as an emergency as it’s vital it’s replaced for the gum to heal

Dentists in the U.K. cannot prescribe painkillers. Well, except ibuprofen. 😳

Sorry, I realise that’s not answered your question regarding painkillers. But getting the socket checked and repacked should lessen the pain considerably over the next 24-48 hours

It needs to be packed properly. Clove oil helps. If air is getting into the socket it never stops hurting.

Dry socket was the worst pain of my life. I ended up in A&E 48 hours after extraction and was prescribed codeine; it was the only thing that touched it.
Hoping for a speedy recovery for you OP!

Did they pack it with the stinky stuff?

Theunamedcat · 03/03/2023 06:55

Also clove oil but be careful it can harm your gum

Yes it’s been packed with some brown stuff iv been 3 times in 5 days for emergency apps but the pain is all under my tongue and she was prodding around and asking if this hurts or that hurts and the pain is also in my ear iv taken naproxen and paracetamol then also tried cocodamol but I’m still in pain it’s been 8 days since I had my tooth removed rhe pain started on day 3-4 and I was straight in she cleaned it and packed it with the brown stuff

Worst pain of my life! Probably because it went on for days.
I took a cocktail of painkillers and almost overdosed - I never take medicine really but I was desperate.
Also ended up in A&E begging for help then sent to another hospital the next day.

My heart goes out to you

I remember after I had a wisdom tooth out and I got really bad pain it was partly due to an infection and I had to use a special mouthwash called Corsodyl (though I'm not in the UK so I was also prescribed strong painkillers, tramadol I think), I wonder if it could be the same thing as its going on so long after the removal. I'd try and get back to the dentist but if you can't/that doesn't help then A&E if the pain is unbearable.
