Cradle Cap - what can we do?

Holymoly321 · 10/02/2008 14:30

DS2 is 12 weeks old and has what looks like severe cradle cap - poor thing. It's so bad that when the flakes come off they are taking all the hair with it. Is this normal? Will his hair grow back? I'm currently using olive oil to soften it.

My DD is 10 months and still has it. And yes, all the hair comes off with it

She has a Max Wall 'do

Holymoly321 · 10/02/2008 15:43

Phew - as long as the hair grows back I can cope with it - sorry to hear about your DD's max wall look - not too nice on a girl... I'm sure her looks more than make up for the lack of hair though!

All three of my children had cradle cap. I tried everything on the market, a lot of things were quite severe. In the end I used baby oil and it came off really easily. Vaseline is also great. Follow-up with brushing their head with a soft baby brush once or twice a day to keep the dry skin off. HTH

I used olive oil and a nit comb. I was a bit at the thought of combing dd's delicate little head with the nit comb when it was suggested, but it didn't bother her and it worked a treat.

spugs · 11/02/2008 10:33

my friend puts butter on her ds head and then lets their collie lick it off! grim but it works a treat

i used olive oil and baby oil worked great

ChirpyGirl · 11/02/2008 10:56

My DD1 still has cradle cap as she got it late after her hair grew and has such thick hair whenever I put oil on it it got soaked up before reaching her scalp so I gave up after having to use 'grown up' shampoo for the 10th time and us both crying....

Should probably try again now she is 2...how long do you leave it on for?

(Oh and DD2 has it too but I am dealing with that before her hair gets too bad!

hi,i used oilatum bath oil - rub it in when they are in the bath, neat then at the end of the bath rinse it off. It worked like a charm and it also sorted out my friend's ds' cradle cap too! You can buy it from any chemists, or on prescription. good luck.

PotPourri · 11/02/2008 11:06

Olive oil is good for softening, but you need to get it off too. I tried everyhthing, and in the end using a clean nail brush (graually so it didn't hurt her, a bit every night), adn picking off with my nails was hte only thing that shifted it. Was also a bit at first, but when it worked, I was glad I had stooped so low!!

DettaJnr · 11/02/2008 11:22

Leave it on for about 10-20mins. I used my nail to scrape it off very gently. It is a pain getting it out of their hair but short of shaving their head you don't really have much choice!!! DS1 5yrs still gets it and her hair is v long.....

DettaJnr · 11/02/2008 11:23

I meant to say, put it on a small area at a time. The first time I made the mistake of putting it on all over and it was a bit of a disaster. A little goes a long way.

Julezboo · 11/02/2008 11:33

MY ds had this up until he hit 11 months when surprisingly i had him in the bath with me and gave the nit comb idea a go, he hated it but it worked all gone now

sushistar · 11/02/2008 13:02

My ds has some cradlecap, but it doesn't really bother me. There's no medical reason to remov it, is there? Obviously nothing wrong with getting rid of it if it looks bad, but do i have to if i don't want to?

izzybiz · 11/02/2008 13:09

My Dd had so much hair, when i used oil i couldn't get it out for days!

I just bought a shampoo for cradle cap and it cleared it all up.

ChirpyGirl · 11/02/2008 14:27

That was my thought sushistar, It wasn't bothering her so no harm, however, now her hair is longer it does 'stick' the bottom few millimetres to her scalp so I can't brush her hair off her face properly as it is 'stuck' faing forward and I can't put it up as it is very obvious orangey goo, it's gross!

ZipadiSuzy · 11/02/2008 15:00

My twins are 4yo and still have cradle cap, I do pick it off, and yes bringing hair out with it, but it always comes back!!!! apparently oil the scalp works, but cradle cap has never really bothered the twins so it hasn't bothered me, and when I do pick it, it makes their head {{{{{{phew}}}}}}

hairycaterpillar · 11/02/2008 15:09

CAPASAL is really good for bad cradle cap.

expensive buy otc or free on prescription.

don't get it in eyes as stings.

works quickly and easily.

MumRum · 11/02/2008 15:20

I used to be a hair dresser and when I was at college I was told it was because the scalp wasn't being brushed to remove any old skirf, (is that the right word) and the blood supply wasn't being stimulated so it all built up,
I always brushed my babies hair with a baby brush and they never got cradle cap... so maybe there was something in it.

ZipadiSuzy · 11/02/2008 15:25

My twins have their hair brushed regularly and still have cradle cap!

carmenelectra · 11/02/2008 15:31

Im laughing at this thread, not cos im mean, but reading about the Max Wall do is making me titter. My ds1 had it bad, used the shampoo etc. and eventually cleared. Ds2 now got it, not as bad as ds1 did. Up until recently i havent been using anything, but ive just started using the shampoo and oil cos it looks like he had brownish hair at the sides and ginger at the front where the cradle cap is!(not that theres anything wrong with ginger hair).

I dont brush his hair though cos he aint got much. Might start brushing it!

MumRum · 11/02/2008 15:58

its not their hair that need brushing but the scalp... apparently...

carmenelectra · 11/02/2008 16:02

Oh right!

Frightened to brush cos then it will flake off. At least now its stuck firmly in place

SnappyLaGore · 11/02/2008 16:18

apols if repeating but havnt read thread.

have just the other day gotten rid of all cradle cap on my 3 and 4yos in one fell swoop after all this time. was a piece of piss too.

got baby oil (or olive oil will do it. in fact any oil will do it, but you dont want them smelling like a chip pan )

liberally applied oil to head, working into hair down to scalp, covering all affected area.

got one of those nitty gritty nit combs, with the twisty bits.

used the comb to v gently comb out all the oil, holding it nearly flat to the head.

had a towel handy to wipe off the comb after each sweep.

all the crap came out with the oil. shampood afterwards in the bath.

did it in front of the telly so they were sitting still/distracted.
