DS2 has a red blotchy rash on his feet and it is moving up his legs

He came to me about 5 minutes ago and said "look at my feet". They are red and blotchy, almsot like the rash you get with hives, but not raised. He says they are not itchy. Since then though it has started moving up his legs and is now at his knees!
I have done the glass test thing (as you do) and it fades when pressed
Any ideas?

nhs direct?

Could be a reaction but if its spreading I'd get professional advice. Has he a fever or any other symptoms?

saltire · 10/02/2008 12:00

He has no other symptoms at all. He says it's not even itchy

I'd get him down to a&e tbh. Better to be safe.

needmorecoffee · 10/02/2008 12:04

if its not itchy its not scabies and unlikely to be rocky mountain spotted fever (unless you've just been to the US)
Probably allergic reaction or heat.

How old is he? Has he had any recent antibiotics/immunisations etc?

saltire · 10/02/2008 12:11

He has just turned 8. He ahs had no antibiotics recently. He had a runny nose yesterdya and complained of a sore throat, but nothing serious, he was running around outside for ages. I gave him some medised at bedtime to help him sleep with his runny nose, but he has had that before,so I know it's not a reaction to that. I looked on the NHS website at rashes and it ahd a choice of Rashes in babies, itchy rashes in adult, or fever in babies. They don't ahve a children section do they. It's either adult or babies they gave advice for

Think you should call nhs direct 0845 4647 or out of hours gp surgery or have you got a walk-in nearby? It probably is a straight-forward reaction, but if they're spreading and covering large area of his body then its a little concerning.

In the meantime, try a cool bath or cold compresses in case it is heat rash (but I had thought smaller pin prick rash for that, i think?

dc had a virus which caused similar. I initially thought ds had a skin reaction as it came on after he'd been sailing on a lake (and capsized !) but dd had same about 10 days later.

Think herpes can present like this. always think word - herpes - sounds worse than it is!

saltire · 10/02/2008 12:35

Ds1 used to get a similar rash when he was a baby (DH just reminded me) and it was always a virus that has caused it.
I ahve Ds1 upstairs in bed, complaining of a headache and feeling sick. he was really dizzy a couple of weeks ago and was sick and off school. The doc said it was a virus. it seems to ahve stopped spreading just now, but will watch it for the next while.

My dss keep getting raised rashes at the end of a virus - post-viral rash. Terrified my mother when she first saw it, but piriton gets it down.

saltire · 10/02/2008 18:50

Well it has settled down, not spreading any more. It ahs all but gone from his legs, but his lower calves and feeet still ahve it. he has no temperture, he says its not itchy, but when I felt it to see if it was raised he said it was sore. Am trying to decide wether to give him piriton syrupa and some calpol, or just leave it! He has been fine, not complained of any other symptoms, so i don't think it is too serious
