Ds has red poo

Not streaks of blood or anything else that fits descriptions of poo I have found on google but still red/brown and very sticky and horrible. They look kind of like a ripe conker or that red tint when sun reflects off brown hair (I know my descriptions leave much to be desired). He has not been well, and his poos have been horrible and sticky while he has been ill. Is this just him getting back to normal or a sign of something else?

Has he eaten/drunk anything beetrooty, etc?
I'd phone NHS 24 to be on the safe side, personally. Sorry, can't be of any more help!

rachaelsara · 09/02/2008 19:59

What has he eaten in the last 48hrs?

nickytwotimes · 09/02/2008 20:00

BTW, I rather enjoyed your descriptions, particularly the sun-off-brown-hair! Quite romantic for such an unromantic subject matter...

LIZS · 09/02/2008 20:00

What's he been drinking maybe blackcurrant, red grape juice etc

Indith · 09/02/2008 20:02

have been a bit on the red side for a little while...just sort of assumed it has been related to eveything else he has had

Has eaten lots of yoghurts, lentils, spag bol, cheese on toast, porridge, fruit. Nothing with beetroot.

nope only drinks water.

(nicky I'm hoping to convey the way the red is a background hue rather than full on bright red )

It probably is nothing, Indith. They come in all shapes and sizes and colours. Never heard of the Bristol Stool chart? Still, best to check it out for peace of mind.

nickytwotimes · 09/02/2008 20:06

For your amusement. Not for the squeamish!

Indith · 09/02/2008 20:07

Ho hum, prob is nothing. Just had a bad run of bugs and he has lost so much weight I'm a little fretfull. I expect we'll be seeing the Dr on Mon for test results so I'll mention it. At least he is eating again

spag bol might be the culprit. i'd leave it 24 hours and see if there's any change.

LIZS · 09/02/2008 20:08

tomato in spag bol ? chocolate makes it darker and stickier too.

Indith · 09/02/2008 20:12

Hmm just never had it before, and he eats spag bol a lot!

No chocolate either

if his tummy is recovering, then maybe the spag bol has had an unusual effect on the colour of his poo. if you're seeing the doc anyway on monday, checking it out with him is probably worthwhile, if it's still an issue.

Milliways · 09/02/2008 20:15

DD had this - turned out Nursery had given them Teeth Disclosing tablets! (Those things that dye any unbrushed stuff on your teeth).

TheDuchessOfNorksBride · 09/02/2008 20:32

Here's a theory. Poo is brown because it's coloured by dead red blood cells. So if he's had a few bugs, perhaps his digestive system has no 'backlog' and everything is passing through quicker. So either the spag bol hasn't had all the colour removed and is more noticeable or the dead red cells haven't completely changed colour.

Sorry - this is mostly me musing on the science of poo colour and is probably not in the least bit useful.
