Does anyone else drink a lot of water?

Off the back of the other thread about water and reading comments about how we drink too much.

I have always been someone that drinks a lot of water. Test for diabetes was negative many years ago after experiencing other symptoms.

I always drink at least 4 litres a day, if not more. If I don’t, I feel dehydrated, thirsty and I get headaches. I am a healthy weight and eat a relatively good diet. I don’t exercise excessively, I go to the gym twice a week and go for a short walk twice a week. My food intake isn’t particularly salty. I get enough sleep etc.

Do some people just naturally need more fluid? I often get comments about my fluid intake

I’m the same! Always have. My dad even commented on it when I was about 5. If I don’t drink that much I end up feeling dehydrated, with dry mouth and even dry lips. It’s mad. My urine is always nearly transparent and my stools are sometimes quite soft so not sure it’s the best thing for me. But I can’t cut back without feeling crap.

4 litres??? I'd literally never get off the toilet.

I drink about 1.5 litres total fluid each day I think

TheFlis12345 · 25/02/2023 22:21

Yup, I drink 3-4 litres most days. If I drink less I get headaches and feel tired. My body is used to it so I only go to the loo every 2-3 hours, same as my colleagues who drink much less.

DiamondApricot · 25/02/2023 22:36

Same here, I get through a 3 litre bottle at work and then just have at least another litre in the evening. My body is used to it and I really feel it if I have less. Never had a UTI though, got to be linked..?

Florissant · 25/02/2023 22:56

Me! I drink four to five litres a day.

CambsAlways · 25/02/2023 22:59

Jeez that’s a lot of water, I drink 2 litres and I’ve never had uti either, eat lot of fruit and veg that contain water obviously, I’d never be off the toilet if I drank 4/5 litres 🤣

WinterMusings · 25/02/2023 23:04

When my diabetes is under control I don't drink as much as I should, when it's not I drink like I'm trying fill a camel with 4 humps 🙄🙄

then pee all bloidy night.

it's one of the things that keeps me up on the wagon!

As someone mentioned above, 4 litres is way too much water and unnecessary. An average adult should drink about 1.5-2 litres of liquid a day. Anything more is just overkill and you won’t really benefit from it.
It can also be dangerous as it messes with the salt content of your body. It removes too much salt and if you don’t replace it, then it can actually dehydrate you. By the sound of it, this is what is happening to you already.
Salt holds onto water, so it hydrates your system by keeping a healthy amount of water inside your cells. If you don’t eat enough salt, there’s not much to keep water in your system so whatever amount you drink will just run through you and your cells will be permanently dehydrated (unless you stop this nonsensical lifestyle).
This happens a lot during heatwaves when people start drinking large amount of water and don’t replace the salt. When they feel weird and faint, the paramedics hook them on an IV drip and guess what’s in the drip? Salt. Of course not the culinary but the medical version of it.
This narrative that salt is bad for you has to stop.

I drink about a litre a day max and I’ve never had a UTI either. Drinking 4/5 litres of water a day isn’t normal or good for you

WideOpenSpaces · 25/02/2023 23:26

Yep I drink loads. Couldn't actually tell you how much but I always have a pint glass full next to me and can't settle if I don't.
I think it's a comfort thing as I've always been like it.
My toddler is the same. Never refuses a drink. And wees a lot. Luckily I've grown out of nappies but I still have to get up once a night on average.

I have always drunk loads. I think I had a test for diabetes when pregnant, but it was fine. Do you only mean water or any liquid? A typical day for me is something like:
Breakfast - incl instant coffee in a large mug, glass of water - c. 600 ml total
Get to work - Costa medium americano coffee 450ml, glass of water 250ml
Probably another glass of water before lunch 250ml
Lunch including a bottle of diet coke 500ml
Cup of tea at around 3pm 300ml
Get home from work 6pm - 2 x glass of water 250ml
Evening 8-9pm - cup of herbal tea 300ml
Always take a pint of water to bed but don't usually drink it all, unless I've been drinking alcohol.

I think that's at least 3l of liquid without thinking about it, but obviously including quite a bit of caffeine. I do wee a lot.

Rebel2 · 26/02/2023 00:42

I need to see how big my mugs are but I drink 5 mugs of tea a day... I suspect they're 400ml and that's before I've touched water!
Then a litre in spin class plus probably another litre through the evening
Not diabetic but talk all day at work and my throat gets dry and scratchy

I have always drank a lot. I used to live in South Florida so it became a habit which suits me now even though I'm in a colder place. I drink around 3l a day, if not more.

I am terrible at not drinking enough, often only manage 1 litre or so a day, and I've never had a UTI either... 🤷
