I have a friend who's daughter is sixteen and suffering badly with her periods due to ovarian cysts, her mum is feeling a little lost as she has no experience of this problem as her daughter is so young, her daughter bleeds heavily during her period and in the time between her periods too, she has been in hospital twice this week. Has anyone else got any experience of this so that they can help and advise her with please?

not much advise for you i'm afraid as was exactly the same from 15 yrs old the only thing i have found that works is cerrazzette which stops me from bleeding altogether

not many good things said about it at moment its progestion only pill maybe she is lacking also in progestion [sorry if spelt wrong]

i also had cysts from age 15 till i was 22 or 23 cant remember went for scan they were gone

all she can do is ask for advise on pills to stop bleeding i was on depo provera injection but my body rejected it and i bled all the time cerrazzett is only thing that has helped me live normally

i was constantly aneamic and didnt actually stop bleeding for 2 yrs if i did it was 2-3 days

i really feel for her as i was also unlucky teenager but it does get better with right medical advise and lots of trials until you find what works for you good luck to her

Is the exact nature of the cysts known, I ask this as there are several types of ovarian cyst.

She needs to be seen by a gynae on a gynae ward and certainly not any other type of ward (as they often do not have the expertise and or experience to deal with this sort of problem properly).

It certainly needs to be checked out further; I can give you two further possibilities for the bleeding - endometriosis (this is often however only diagnosed through keyhole surgery) and or fibroids. Both are no respector of age and person (they may think she is too young to suffer from either - she is not). Any bleeding also between periods should be investigated medically.

The exact cause needs to be determined by a gynaecologist. She needs to be seen further by such a person asap.

BCP's are only a short term measure and can actually mask the symptoms of the underlying problem (i.e not make it go away completely).

It will certainly be in this girl's interests to find the actual cause. Her Mother and daughter cannot afford to be fobbed off!!!.

thanks lottie, had a good read of these.
She is being refured to the gynae clinic just waiting for the appointment now.
Pain is a lot better for the moment but i know her period is due which is always bad, painful and very heavy, then we have the mid cycle episode to come.
She is usually a very active girl doing all sorts of sport and does push herself, beyond what her body is telling her, school very good and understanding, especially as this year is exam year.
Thanks

All of what you have described possibly points to endometriosis (which is the second most common gynae condition seen in women after fibroids). Mid cycle pain and bleeding are also experienced with endo too.

Would ask the gynae about this as a matter of urgency and don't let him fob you off by saying she's too young to have this (because she is not).

Another thing this young lady could do before the gynae appointment is to keep a pain and symptom diary noting down every symptom suffered daily.

Has anyone suggested the contraceptive pill?
I had bad problems as a teen and found it was endometriosis, my mother had the same problem.
I was put on microgynon and 'tri cycled' so I only had a period every 63 days or so, and it really helped.
I think these days there are (as yet unlicensed) pills where you have no periods at all.

yes she has been on the pill for about 6mths now, which at 1st was helping, still is but she has got in more pain with mid cycle periods very heavy but slightly better than they were.
Its hard for me as i have never suffered and find it hard to seeher in so much pain so regurally.
