This is 16yo ds's jaw.

Is the impacted canine really so much larger than the other canines?

No, the DPT is a 2D image of a 3D mouth. The canine is superimposed on the radiograph so gives the illusion its much bigger. There could be minor differences between canines, like all teeth, but will look like the rest of the mouth once through. Canines do have the longest roots though!

By superimposed do you mean that it is in front of the incisors? The orthodontist could not feel the tooth at all, and I'm pretty sure she said that it was pointing inwards in ds's mouth. I understood that to mean that it was behind his incisors. That's why I was surprised to see how big it appears on the X-ray.

Yes that sounds right. By superimposed i just mean how it looks on the radiograph. It’s not that uncommon to have canines wander off track into the palate (roof of mouth). Easy to manage with braces, in most cases. Hope that helps. Good luck with braces 😁
