Vision express has said I don’t need glasses , but I can’t see much

I went to specsavers last year for a proper eye test after 30 years never having them due to having great sight . I got given a prescription for slight sight issues and astigmatism. Astigmatism was what I assumed I had which is what forced me to go in the first place . The glasses however gave me double vision and while driving I could see two road signs , two traffic lights and everything else reflective was just doubled .

this winter I have a halo around everything that reflects light , every single street light has a massive stream of light like a beam coming from it , every brake light spreads across my vision . I can barely see my phone or computer screen because it appears jumbled and bubbly . Basically any light source really disturbs my vision .

i went to vision express and the man did a very in depth, long talk through my sight and showed me the eyes on the screen , told me my sight was near perfect and I’d have to start worrying about glasses in 10 years once I hit my 40s .

however , I can barely see a thing in winter . When it gets dark I have to constantly close one eye or squint because I can’t see past lights and tvs and things . It’s really killing me stress wise because sight is a very basic need and I can’t see a bloody thing .

what am I supposed to do then ?

@Augend23 thank you . As I walked by one I had this same thought .

@ConfusedNT Thank you I am doing some googling .

@Changingnametime i will Google these . I was also looking at those blue Johnny depp lenses which are supposed to help with light interference which I feel is what my problem is

@notangelinajolie yeah as far as I know they do the pressure thing as standard . My nephew has this issue you describe but they never mentioned anything in vision express

@SavetheNHS thank you . the double vision thing is only WITH the glasses specsavers gave me . I’d be crawling around on my knees everywhere if I had double vision . It’s scary as it is hha

@Cottagecheeseisnotcheese The double vision is only with the glasses thank god but when I did the chart all I could see is fuzzy halo around all of the letters but I could still read them ? All the light in the room was really confusing my brain when trying to focus . I’m going with that for sure as a few people have said that and then I’ll go to an independent optician in future

@Screwcorona i was told by that guy that it definitely isn’t astigmatism and it’s stupid I was told I had it ? I was like well what is it then ? And he said probably your brain so your dr needs to look into it . You know those photos of “ this is astigmatism” my sight looks identical to that

@Xrays funny because I have pcos and in the past year my metabolism and hormones have shifted dramatically so that would be interesting and a much (although sad at 30) more preferable answer as I don’t want it to be my brain .

@Unsure33 yes he was very thorough and showed me on the screen and said. “ there’s a lot going on with you medically really , you need referral from us to the gp but your eyes are not the problem, they’re
Perfectly fine “

@C8H10N4O2 I rang them as soon as I got my glasses and realised they were making my vision worse , they said you’ll have to talk to your optician in store , so I did and they said the prescription won’t be the issue , then just completely ignored me after that , so I gave up .

@Prettypaisleyslippers Had it not worsened so rapidly I would assume this honestly . It made sense I had ageing eyes at 30 until the optician said it’s not that

How does print look to you? Does it look as if it's moving on the page, or shimmering? Or does it look normal, running along in a straight line. I only ask as I have Meares Irlen syndrome and wasn't diagnosed until I was 43 no matter how many times I thought I needed glasses. It's a visual processing issue and I also have big issues with glare.

Might not be this at all but it still gets missed so worth mentioning.

Yes, this is part of my DD’s problem - things moving - lampposts, words on page etc. Prism lenses fixed it. She also uses coloured overlays.

Go to an independent optician, one that is recommended in your area (ask in local fb sites or friends or family). Much better than the chains

Oblomov23 · 23/02/2023 18:29

Go for a 2nd opinion. Go back to specsavers and tell them, ask them to put it right.

helpfulperson · 23/02/2023 18:50

So your optician said it wasn't a problem he could deal with or that could be fixed by glasses, you needed to go through your GP. What has your GP said?

When I was referred to an ophthalmologist by the optician they wrote to my GP asking them to refer them They didn't refer direct. Sounds like he is saying that is what needs to happen.

@hairypaws on paper it looks very normal , although sometimes I have to get very close . Anything That is backlit like a phone actually looks all over the place , sometimes almost textured , sometimes has blurred spots , sometimes I can see the dark of the words underneath each line . it makes me feel very queasy . When the sun is going down and the room light is changing I notice it most

@Changingnametime are coloured overlays like bono wears ? My mum has this light perception problem I started suffering with under supermarket lighting, where I feel as though I’m sinking or dizzy and apparently people who suffer that wear the bono glasses

@helpfulperson my gp won’t do Anything about anything unless I call and nag but the optician said he’s putting a note through to my gp so I’ll go in and see when I do other tests

The halo’s around lights could be a sign of glaucoma. Have they mentioned testing for that?

You can get them fitted to glasses, but my DD just uses them for books and screens-she lays them over the page or laptop screen. Otherwise, her prism lenses in her glasses correct everything. She spent years going to the GP and under the neurology department of the hospital.
