Following on from the thread here about people still experiencing symptoms after having their gall bladder removed (due to some sort of post operative syndrome), I was wondering if any of you could share with me your positive expereinces of having it done?

As I'm due to be having mine out soon, after suffereing years of pain with it on and off, I was shocked and scared to read that it is not uncommon to continue to experience just as many symptoms after removal

It's made me think again about having mine out I can tell you

So....I thought I'd try to balance it up and get a little perspective by inviting others to tell me how they had theirs out and that they've never looked back and life has been wonderful since!

Also, how have you managed your diet since?

I've heard that having the constant drip, drip of bile into the gut following removal of the gall bladder can cause diahorrea (sp?), bloating etc. Do you try to avoid fat althogether or just saturated fat? Are "good" fats i.e. advacados, nuts etc still OK?

Any experiences you can share with me would be really helpful and informative.

I had post cholesystectomy(?) syndrome after I had my gall bladder removed and whilst it was unpleasant it has almost completely gone now(3yrs later) and was only ever occasional and infrequent. IMO anything is better than the pain of the attacks. don't worry about it too much, it may not happen to you. good luck.

FIL has just has his out and seems fine, apart from contracting pneumonia in hospital .

I had mine out three years ago (I was 20 weeks pregnant with DS1) and have to say that it was amazing.

I had no pain after at all, infact I was out of hospital the same night and back at work 3 days post operation.

The operation was a great sucess for me, no more pain, fainting, going yellow. I had a infacted gall blader in addition to 100's of tiny stones

I wpould do ahead again tomorrow

had mine out nearly a year ago and VERY rarely have attacks - and only after eating fatty food (shoudl avoid them really!) - really don'#t think twice about it, the results are brill. Did have diahorrea for a couple of weeks after op after eating but just meant weight loss to be honest!

Had mine out in 2006 after several years of suffering with it and haven't had any symptoms whatsoever since FANTASTIC!!!. My consultant said to eat a normal healthy diet, no need to avoid any foods so long as everything was in moderation. I don't even give it a second thought now.

Had mine out nearly 11 yrs ago, after 2nd baby, and have had no problems since.

Hi Gunnerbean. Could you link to that thread please? I had mine out about three years ago and it has been fine. Except last year I had some pain in my back and if I overdo the booze (ie a couple of glasses of red these days ) I can almost 'feel' my liver hurting.
I'd be interested to find out about this syndrome as my GP reckoned I just had backache.

Gunnerbean · 10/02/2008 00:21

Hi Smugmumofboys, I've never linked a thread before but I've followed the instructions and hope it works

here

I've just scared myself shitless looking at all the videos of laparoscopic coleosysectomies on the net! Don't know if it was a good idea or a totally bad move! I can say it was an enlightening, if not edifying, experience!

Suddenly feeling rather nauseous

Had mine out last March after having pancreatitis over Xmas/New Year. It's been great. No difference to my life except I don't get gallstone attacks any more. I was told all the horror stories, like you can never eat fat again, it will still hurt etc etc. For me it is now like I never had gallbladder probs. Can tell you more tomorrow when sober and more able to type!

Very encouraging to read this. Mine needs to come out really which is why I am awake at this time of night .

A friend had hers out after years of absolute misery with it. Turns out it was so badly diseased when they removed it that it was barely recognisable as a gall bladder.

Anyhoo - she's been absolutely fine ever since. No recurrences.

She has, however, developed crohns disease so still has problems, just not wth gall bladder.

Gunnerbean · 10/02/2008 19:43

Oh Chocolateteapot how I can relate to that!! If I had a £ for every sleepless night I've had over the last 20 years I'd be bloody rich!!

My sister had her out 9yrs ago she has had no major problems since has to take antacids if she gets a flair upto.

she has to watch what see eats. Avoid high fat foods, she has also found that she can not eat things with garlic in as they can cause the odd flair up.

The main problem she has is that it was found after the operation that she had a blood clotting problem so have to have a vitamin K injection every 3mths.
