Help me feel normal after Norovirus

Habbyhadno · 21/02/2023 12:55

The whole family has been ill from Norovirus, I presume, for 10 days now. The kids have a day or two being fine and then puke again and I was sick once but have had awful water diahorrea for four days that is thankfully subsiding. I feel TERRIBLE, what can I do to help recover? I'm struggling to look after the kids felling the way I am.

No advice but lurking along as we are the same. All sick two weeks ago for a good 7 days. The youngest got a double dose. I am shattered after it and trying to work out how to rebuild all of our immune systems.
It's so unpleasant. I feel like my entire house needs washed down with dettol.

I've been going to bed with the kids each night for the last week. It helps a bit but not exactly a long term solution.

Do a deep clean of touch points in the house firstly.

Hydrate with Broth or even better bone broth, you can cook pasta in that for the children with some light vegetables a nd a bit of good butter or EVOO.

Warm ( not hot ) clear drinks like honey and lemon, blackcurrant cordial.

I've never, ever been this ill with a sick bug before. I feel like it's going to be a long journey to feeling ok again.

Following this.
I am on my second gastro bug in less than a month.
It's causing me trouble with work which adds stress.

I'm still at the dry toast stage and haven't thrown up today after I think 8 bouts yesterday. Lots of diarrhoea though.

It's so bloody miserable and I need to work out what to do once I'm better, to try and prevent catching something else.

MrsMoastyToasty · 21/02/2023 20:21

Wipe door and drawer handles
Buy everyone new toothbrushes
Stay off milk until your stomach is back to normal.

AnnaMagnani · 21/02/2023 20:27

Avoid all dairy for at least 4 weeks.

It's very common to get a temporary lactose intolerance after norovirus.

southbailey · 21/02/2023 20:50

Yes I've been told this about dairy.

Trying to think about alternatives to milk for adding to my tea...

I just wanted to ask does this get better? My daughter came down with said mystery sick bug on Sunday. Threw up loads, Monday sick in the night, Tuesday sick first thing of the AM and then nothing until last night where she was sick after her dinner and again in the night. The low fever seems to be lingering too. It’s exhausting :(

Eventually. It took my daughter a full week to recover. She was randomly being sick once a day every single day for 7 days after she first puked.
I felt better after 5 or 6 days but then caught covid last week, so I'm back to square one Sad

I just gave her beige food and didn't let her take her water to bed with her because I thought it might have been laying down after drinking that didn't help with the puking. It was horrific, so sending sympathies. Hope they're on the mend soon.

We bleached and steam cleaned everything we could, I hear you can reinfect yourself?

Some studies suggested oregano oil and grapeseed oil so I got capsules of both

Doctor suggested aloe vera juice but I felt better by then. It does go on along time, they say it's like 24 - 48 hours but it isn't, it seems.

I had yogurt, not sure if that counts as dairy, but mostly BRAT diet for at least a week.

Sunnycats · 22/02/2024 06:50

I'm suffering too, second time in 6 months. Before that I couldn't even tell you the last time I had Noro/stomach bug. I woke with a jolt at 3am early hours of Weds and have felt absolutely horrendous. Horrible watery diarrhea and the most violent vomiting. Then temperature, chills, sweats and headache.

It's been 28 hrs now and feel a bit better so trying with water now as that wouldn't stay down before. Hopefully the worst is over. Its absolutely vile - I honestly felt like I was dying.

I ditto the milk thing - also recommended probiitics. My stomach was a mess for weeks after the last time, and cutting out dairy helped but it was the probiitics that really fixed things in the end. Yakult did nothing so bought a 7 day course where you have it mixed into water and honestly by day 2 my stomach settled right down.

Huge love to everyone suffering its bloody awful 😖

Interesting that you have covid 5-6 days after the sick bug, as that is exactly how a lot of covid is presenting. The sick bug most likely was covid, which now takes 4-6 days to test positive.
Hopefully you all recover well. Dairy free often helps after any gastro upset.

I agree with this. It's Covid. Tests don't appear to be working as well as they were either.

Oh goodness- I too have been HARD vomiting- endlessly for 24 hrs
Puked again this morning after putting dog’s food in her bowl and the smell of it set me off again
( Nice food normally)
Was meant to be going to Badminton Horse Trials with friend ( high spot of year) but no way is that happening now .

Luckily have some rehydration salts now
gently sipping them

Son ( now adult) offered to pop over but he gets Noro as bad as me!

They say some blood groups suffer far more than others
0+ being the most susceptible.

IS Noro linked to Covid??

Not had covid yet to my knowledge- but feel like a wrung out dishcloth now.

Hope anyone else going through this recovers soon.

Thanks for info about avoiding Dairy.

Don’t touch dairy for a good couple of weeks. It’s the absolute worst for making symptoms come back.
Dry toast, banana, rice and then protien like chicken and veg home made soup, clear fluids. And then unprocessed nutritious foods only. No junk like biscuits and cake etc. For you and the children if it keeps coming back. For at least a week.
wash all towels in hot wash. Disinfect with a good antiback spray or bleach solution all the touch points.
Hot wash all bedding.
change the toothbrushes.
You must treat your stomach very gently with gentle easy to digest foods and no dairy what so ever for at least a week.

SincereH · 10/05/2024 18:35

Oh no, that sounds awful! Norovirus is the worst, and ten days is a rough stretch. I can definitely relate to feeling terrible after battling a stomach bug. There were a few things that helped me bounce back after a nasty bout of food poisoning a while back.

First things first, stay hydrated! Norovirus can leave you dehydrated, which can make you feel even worse. I found it helpful to sip on water or clear broth constantly throughout the day. Electrolyte drinks can also be a good option, especially if you've been losing a lot of fluids.

When you can stomach it, try to eat bland foods like toast, rice, or bananas. These are easy to digest and can help settle your stomach. I know it's not exciting, but it'll help you get back on your feet faster.

As for taking care of the kids, maybe your partner or another family member could take a turn? A little break, even for an hour or two, can make a big difference. In the meantime, focus on resting as much as possible. Your body needs time to heal.

I also found that taking probiotics helped after my food poisoning. They can help restore the good bacteria in your gut, which can be helpful after an illness. Of course, it's always a good idea to check with your doctor before starting any new supplements.

Here's hoping you and your family feel better soon! Hang in there!
