Has anyone’s child ever been taken to picu due to an asthma attack?

DD suffers from severe asthma - 6 hospital admissions in the last 4 months. She had another attack last week and as usual after 10 puffs of her reliever did nothing I brought her down to a&e.

However for the first time they couldn’t stabilise her with the usual back to back nebulisers, steroids and oxygen. They couldn’t get her out of the attack. She ended up with intravenous magnesium and then iv aminophylline when she finally turned a corner and stopped struggling. We were told she was being admitted to picu but she narrowly avoided this and was well enough to be cared for on the normal ward. She got home yesterday after 3 nights.

I'm feeling really traumatised from it all, she’s only just a baby, 15 months old. My heart is breaking and my anxiety is through the roof. I can’t believe my baby almost ended up in intensive care due to an asthma attack.

Has anyone else got any experience with this? I don’t know of anyone with asthma this severe.

Hi, I know it was a long time ago, but I saw your thread and I went through the same thing with my son(who is alot older)twice last winter. He was in HDU both times and also had to have aminophylline and magnesium drips. I also found it very traumatic and even though he hasn't had another attack since February I still carry a strange anxiety with me over it.
How are you now? I hope your daughter's asthma has managed to get better under control?
I'm sure you have been offered this, but at my child's respiratory consultant appointments we also saw a psychologist who deals with trauma. If they haven't already been in touch, I would ask about this. I spoke and saw her a couple of times and found it useful. 💐

@Winifredduck thank you for your response! I was at a very low point when I made this thread.

Sorry to hear you’ve been through this also, it is truly horrendous. What age is your ds? My DD is almost 2 now. She has been admitted a few times since this this post (over 10 times in total since last October) but she has been doing well the last couple of months however her respiratory consultant is concerned with the start of winter now that we could be in for a repeat of last year but we take it each week at a time.

I had no idea we could have access to a psychologist, I think that could be very beneficial as I do suffer a lot with health anxiety now, every time the DC develop a cough my blood runs cold and I pack a hospital bag. How has your DS been since then?
